Supportive.Hands.Hospice Hand in hand, by your side

01/12/2026

Next month Supportive Hands Hospice is bringing The Prepared Heart Project to Mountain View Lutheran Church, LCMS on February 26—a community gathering created to help individuals and families navigate aging, planning, and support options with more clarity and less fear.

This is an education-first event with trusted local professionals and resources—plus free lunch provided.

If you’ve ever thought, “I don’t even know what questions to ask,” this is a great place to start.

Gen X PSA: we were basically raised by the streetlights and a microwave… so of course now we’re the ones expected to make end-of-life decisions for our parents—with zero training.

I’m in the middle of a real-time conversation with a friend whose loved one is currently in the hospital and not doing well. DNR was briefly mentioned, and it hit me (again): most people don’t actually understand what happens when there is no DNR and the default is “do everything.”

CPR is not the TV version—especially for older adults.

In a geriatric training I recently completed, common complications of CPR in the elderly were listed as:
• Rib fractures (as high as 97%)
• Brain injury (listed around 50%)
• Plus other serious complications such as sternal fractures, burns from defibrillation, and bleeding in the chest.

This isn’t fear-based. This is reality. And it’s exactly why these conversations must happen before there’s a crisis—while our parents, spouses, and loved ones can still clearly express what they want.

A DNR does not mean “do not treat.”
It means that if the heart or breathing stops, care follows the person’s wishes instead of defaulting to aggressive interventions that can be traumatic for a frail body.

Gen X… let’s do what we’ve always done: handle it.

Ask your people:
• “If your heart stops, do you want CPR?”
• “What does quality of life mean to you?”
• “What outcomes would you never want to live through?”

Have the conversation. Put it in writing. Tell your family.
Because in the hospital, “briefly mentioned” is not enough.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk 🥰

Hospice volunteers are the quiet heroes—showing up with presence, patience, and a kind of love that doesn’t need words. 💜
They sit, they listen, they hold space… and somehow make the hard parts feel a little less heavy.

If you’ve ever volunteered in hospice (or been supported by one), thank you. You matter more than you know. 🕊️

And if you feel called to volunteer with Supportive Hands Hospice, we’d love to talk. Please reach out—

Merry Christmas from Supportive Hands Hospice. 💜🎄

🎄✨ This season, joy matters.

Our chaplain, Lisa, was out and about with Mr. Claus and Mrs. Claus, making special visits to some of our hospice patients and bringing smiles, comfort, and a little Christmas magic along the way. ❤️

At Supportive Hands Hospice, it’s the small moments that become the biggest gifts—presence, comfort and being reminded that you’re not alone.

Music Bingo flyers delivered… and then we got absolutely sidetracked by Encore On First’s holiday decorating. Some residents heard “door contest?” and said, “ challenge accepted.” 🎄✨
One resident decorated two entire floors and it was next-level.
Downsizing doesn’t dim spirit—it just concentrates the sparkle. ❤️📸

The Atria Chandler Villas had the sweetest craft afternoon yesterday! 💜
Miranda from Homewatch CareGivers hosted an ornament-making session, and everyone created one for the community tree and one to take home.
Simple moments, big smiles, and a beautiful way to kick off the season. 🎄✨
