One in four men and one in two women over age 50 will break a bone due to osteoporosis. Unfortunately, changes that happen as we age can make it harder for our bones to heal. That’s because with osteoporosis, bone quality is lower, there’s less blood supply to the bone and the bone loses some of its ability to repair itself.

When you’re older, bone fractures can heal slowly and lead to other health complications. So, it’s important to keep your bones as healthy as possible.

Fall is here, and that means respiratory virus season is coming. Medical experts say now is the best time to get an annual flu shot.

Arizona had a massive flu season last fall and winter, with more than 75,000 confirmed cases — more than double what is typical in the state.

Dr. Aneesh Narang, assistant site medical director with the emergency department at the Banner-University Medical Center Phoenix, said Arizonans should not underestimate how dangerous influenza can be. (via KJZZ Phoenix)

Arizona had a massive flu season last fall and winter, with 75,000 cases — more than double what is typical in the state. Experts recommend getting a flu shot in October, before flu season peaks.

Most of us experience mood swings. Individuals might have days when they feel happy and at ease and other days when they're sad and tired. Changes in moods are part of being human. But if moods cycle higher and lower than average — between mania and depression — a person might have a mental health condition known as cyclothymia.

Mood swings that are more extreme than everyday changes but less severe than bipolar disorder could be cyclothymia. A mental health professional can help.

Nearly 40,000 frozen blood samples collected during one of the largest U.S. studies of high blood pressure may soon reveal critical clues about who is most at risk for Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias — and a Phoenix researcher is helping to lead the charge.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has awarded a $21.6 million, five-year grant to a team of researchers, including Banner Alzheimer’s Institute, to explore how hypertension may contribute to brain disease. Their work will focus on identifying molecules in blood that signal the earliest stages of Alzheimer’s and related dementias.

This groundbreaking study represents a first-of-its-kind approach that positions Banner Alzheimer's Institute at the forefront of innovative dementia research. More:

CAREGIVER CORNER SPOTLIGHT: For Mary Lawrie, caregiving has been a journey of patience, love, and growth.

When asked what resource was most essential for her day-to-day life as a caregiver, she said, “My one and only resource that I held close to my heart was patience. Your love will always shine by being patient.”

Her advice for new caregivers? “Always be mindful of your emotions that can affect you and your family. Stay strong and resilient in a difficult situation.”

Through the challenges, Mary found unexpected joy: “Surprisingly enough, I have learned to be a better human being by helping others. It fills my heart with love.”

She also discovered the importance of acceptance: “Using a softer voice and gentle hand goes a long, long way to helping with acceptance.”

Mary says it’s important to remind yourself on tough days that caregiving is also about self-care: “It’s not easy to do, but taking time for yourself benefits both people involved. Love yourself, and your love will translate to your partner.”

Since Ann Taylor of Peoria was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s disease two years ago, she and her husband Rusty have been sharing their experiences through their Youtube channel to help others better understand the disease.

On their channel, they discuss what it has been like to take part in two clinical trials at Banner Alzheimer’s Institute and share updates on their daily lives. The couple, who have been married for 28 years, always enjoys lots of laughter and hope regardless of their challenges. Several of the videos have amassed thousands of views.

“When Ann was diagnosed, we looked for other people's experiences with early onset Alzheimer’s,” says Rusty. “We found a few, but felt like sharing our situation could add to what is out there. Each person's experience is unique, so we hope that our story provides another perspective on living with this condition.”

Ann is currently taking part in her second clinical trial at Banner Alzheimer’s Institute in Phoenix.

Ann and Rusty share their experiences with Ann's diagnosis of Early Onset Alzheimer's.

CAREGIVER CORNER SPOTLIGHT: Mark Garrity of Phoenix cares for his partner Leonard Chayrez, who was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s in his 50s.

“I naturally tend to plan for what could go wrong, but I’ve learned the importance of living in the moment,” Mark shared. “Leonard still has a fountain of joy that spills over onto me—especially when I need it most. To stay grounded, I rely on prayer, meditation, laughter, patience, and the support of family and fellow care partners. These are the tools in my ‘toolbox’ that keep me on the right path.”

Mark says what has surprised him most is Leonard’s eagerness to remain engaged: “He wants to ‘own’ his journey and understand as much as he can. Alzheimer’s requires us to keep learning, growing, and being compassionate with ourselves and each other.”

Their story is a powerful reminder that even in the face of Alzheimer’s, resilience and love can guide the way forward.
