ArMA President Dr. Jason Jameson recently met with Governor Katie Hobbs at the Arizona State Capitol to champion the issues that matter most to our physician community and the patients we serve.

Already making good on his presidential promises, Dr. Jameson brought our collective voice directly to the Capitol's Fourth Floor, discussing priorities that are critical to fostering the healthcare Arizonans deserve, including:

🤝 Investing in graduate medical education to increase the number of physicians available to care for our growing patient population state-wide
🤝 Ensuring healthcare is appropriately funded so no patient goes without
🤝 Removing red-tape & barriers to care for physicians & patients

This is advocacy in action. ArMA is bringing your concerns, your patients' needs, and our profession's future to the table where decisions are made.

We're proud to introduce James Nachbar, MD, as the Arizona Medical Association's July Member Spotlight!

Dr. Nachbar is a plastic surgeon practicing in Scottsdale, where he owns and operates Scottsdale Plastic Surgery. He was recently elected to the role of president-elect by his peers and is excited to serve as ArMA's 135th president.

In his interview, he shares thoughts on leading the House of Medicine as healthcare evolves. When asked what his top priority will be as president, Dr. Nachbar pointed to the need for more physicians to understand the dire importance of unified advocacy: "Too often, doctors don’t realize how much of what affects their day-to-day practice—reimbursement issues, scope-of-practice battles, regulatory burdens—is shaped at the state level... We need more physicians at the table..."

Beyond medicine, Dr. Nachbar has always been fascinated by how systems work, including the U.S. legal system, which led him to pursue a law degree alongside one of his staff members. "Whether it’s computing, medicine, or law, I’ve always been drawn to understanding how complex systems work—and how to make them better," explained Dr. Nachbar.

While Dr. Nachbar is passionate about many things — developing software, traveling the world, and exploring systems — he has found medicine the most rewarding.

The Arizona Medical Association proudly welcomes Jason Jameson, MD, as our 134th president and first-ever urologist to hold this office.

Dr. Jameson steps into leadership at the helm of the association after nearly two decades of membership, several terms on our Board of Directors, and years of dedicated physician advocacy. Most recently, he advanced legislation to expand care team flexibility by allowing medical assistants to place urinary catheters, which was signed into law earlier this year.

Having practiced medicine in Arizona since 2005, Dr. Jameson understands the challenges physicians and patients face. In his own words:

“From Medicaid funding to health insurers’ burdensome red tape, physicians and patients are up against many challenges and barriers. I’m honored to lead ArMA, the largest physician organization in Arizona, fighting for our patients to receive the high-quality care they deserve and also for physicians to practice medicine as they so choose, free from administrative burdens.”

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Jason Jameson on his role as ArMA's esteemed 134th President!

Over the past year, Nadeem Kazi, MD, AGAF, has served as the Arizona Medical Association's esteemed 133rd President.

During that time, his dynamic leadership catalyzed ArMA's advocacy efforts, expanded our organization's reach, and brought the physician community together around a shared goal: improving Arizona healthcare.

Under Dr. Kazi's leadership, ArMA successfully led efforts to:
🏆 Regulate insurers' use of AI in medical claim denials
🏆 Shorten physicians' insurance credentialing timeline
🏆 Increase Arizona's investment in GME funding

We are grateful for Dr. Kazi's selfless dedication, unwavering passion, and fearless ambition, which have elevated our mission, strengthened our physician community, and advanced the future of healthcare in Arizona.

Physician-led. Patient-focused. ArMA-strong! 💪

🚨 BREAKING NEWS

Just moments ago, the U.S. House passed the "Big Beautiful Bill," which includes sweeping changes to the Medicaid funding that our healthcare system relies on.

ArMA is extremely disappointed in Congress’s short-sighted decision. We have repeatedly warned lawmakers of the severe disruptions these funding changes will have on our communities. ArMA did so loudly, consistently, and collaboratively. Now, physicians and patients will pay the price for lawmakers' rushed policymaking.

As a high-growth population state, Arizona will be disproportionately impacted. Governor Katie Hobbs has stated that we will not be able to cover the lost federal funds with state monies. So, the bill’s passage means a swell in uncompensated care, which will drive up healthcare costs, private insurance premiums, and hospital wait times. Most importantly, it will worsen patient outcomes and undermine their health.

"The bill's passage is a significant concern to the healthcare community, especially with the potential for thousands of Arizonans losing their healthcare and rural hospitals closing due to cuts in funding," stated Jason Jameson, MD, ArMA's 134th President.

"However, we cannot let it dissuade us. The fight for Medicaid is not over. Now is the time to organize, speak out, and stand together."

Medicaid matters: to patients, to physicians, to our communities.

That's why the Arizona Medical Association joined the American Medical Association and 45 other states in telling the U.S. Senate how dire cuts to Medicaid would be for healthcare nationwide.

As the Senate considers even deeper cuts, the healthcare community is rallying behind real solutions and new paths forward.

“It’s important that the people who care for others use our voices.” In Flagstaff, the healthcare community did exactly that.

Just hours after the U.S. Senate released its federal budget proposal — one that includes even deeper Medicaid cuts — physicians, hospital leaders, and other advocates gathered for ArMA’s “Saving Medicaid” Town Hall.

Across the state and across specialties, the physician community agrees: Medicaid matters. It matters to our hospitals. It matters to our patients. It matters to our communities.

Thank you to our panelists, who led a discussion on the ways Medicaid cuts will undermine the healthcare Arizonans need:
💜 Teresa Bertsch, MD — CMO, The NARBHA Institute
💜 Rachel Levitan, MD — CMO, Northern Arizona Healthcare
💜 Anne Newland, MD — CEO, North Country HealthCare
💜 Ron Tuckerman, MD — pediatrician, Mountain View Pediatrics
💜 Pasquale Bernardi, MD — president of Northern Arizona Healthcare Medical Group

And, a shout out to our cohosts and fellow advocates — Northern Arizona Healthcare, the Arizona Hospital and Healthcare Association, the Arizona Nurses Association, the Arizona Alliance for Community Health Centers, and the Health System Alliance of Arizona — for making this event possible.

The work continues. 💪

Physicians, nurses, healthcare executives, students, and others recently gathered for our "Saving Medicaid" Town Hall, a forum for the entire healthcare community.

The consensus? No corner of Arizona’s healthcare system will be spared if Medicaid funding is slashed. The impact would ripple through every community, leaving millions of Arizonans without the care they need.

Together, we're building a plan of resilience to ensure Arizonans' care isn't undermined by cuts to Medicaid funding.

Governor Katie Hobbs invited healthcare advocates to a ceremonial signing of House Bill 2173 and House Bill 2175.

The Arizona Medical Association proudly joined the Arizona Hospital & Healthcare Association, Consilium Consulting, and the Arizona Nurses Association in celebrating these two historic pieces of healthcare legislation.

📜 HB2175, an ArMA-initiated bill, will safeguard patients against AI-driven medical claim denials, which create new burdens and barriers to care.

📜 HB2173 removes stigmatizing mental health questions from the licensure process for the broader healthcare community following the passage of legislation to protect physicians in 2022.

Thank you to our fellow advocates and to Representative Julie Willoughby, who sponsored both bills, for her continued efforts to champion Arizona's healthcare and patient communities!
