For the last decade, Karen Woodhouse served as the director of Eyes On Learning. Because of her hard work and ability to bring partners together, hundreds of thousands of Arizona kids now receive vision screenings at school every year—ensuring vision problems don’t stand in the way of their ability to learn and thrive.

We're so grateful for Karen’s leadership and the strong foundation she built. Please join us in congratulating her and wishing her a happy retirement!

For a decade, Karen Woodhouse led the collaborative efforts of Eyes On Learning that has made Arizona a leader in children’s vision health.

Is reading a struggle, even with "perfect" 20/20 vision? It could be Convergence Insufficiency (CI)—a common issue where eyes don't work together up close.

Watch for headaches or skipping lines. The good news? CI is treatable! Schedule a comprehensive eye exam today to help them thrive.

Convergence insufficiency is a common eye coordination problem in which the eyes drift outward when reading or doing near point work. Blur and discomfort can result from eyes that cannot properly point to a target, such as a book or computer.

DID YOU KNOW: A huge number of learning challenges are actually vision challenges!

Many children who struggle to learn (up to 60%!) are believed to have an uncorrected vision issue.

We're on a mission to make sure every child has the clear vision they need to thrive in the classroom and beyond.

Learn the signs of strabismus from our friends at the American Optometric Association.

Crossed eyes, or strabismus, is a condition in which both eyes do not look at the same place at the same time. It usually occurs due to poor eye muscle control or farsightedness. Strabismus usually develops in infants and young children, most often by age 3. But older children and adults can also de...

We know factors like family history and screen time play a role in a child’s eyesight. But what about the air they breathe? A major new study found a link between exposure to air pollutants and an increased risk of developing nearsightedness (myopia).

This research reinforces our commitment to ensuring every child, in every community, gets the vision screening and care they need to succeed in the classroom and beyond.

Policy change is essential. Researchers issue warning after discovering overlooked factor impacting children's vision: 'The risk to become shortsighted is higher' first appeared on The Cool Down.

The link between vision and learning is real.

Good vision can set a child up for success from the start. Being able to see well is key to physical and social development and to learning. Not all children can see well, and many of them are unaware of their issue, leaving parents and caretakers unaware too.

Heads up, families! New research links more screen time and less sleep to a sharp rise in dry, uncomfortable eyes in children.

Dr. Rahul Bhola warns that poor screen hygiene, along with less sleep, is driving a rise in dry eye among children, and that early prevention is key.

Eyes On Learning is honored to carry on the powerful legacy Karen Woodhouse built. Thank you, Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust, for celebrating her!

We are thrilled to share and reflect on a major milestone for a key community leader. Karen Woodhouse, the inaugural director of Eyes On Learning, was recently honored with the Senator Andy Nichols Award by the Arizona Public Health Association AZPHA for her career-long contributions to public health.

Her visionary leadership was instrumental in passing Arizona's landmark vision screening law. This critical systems-level change ensures nearly 500,000 students receive annual vision screenings, removing a key barrier to learning and success.

Thank you, Karen, for your inspiring dedication to Arizona's children and families. Our community is stronger because of you. Congratulations!
