A respected colleague wrote this and I totally agree.
I know, I know…it was on sale at Costco. 😆 (Don’t shoot the messenger)
Here’s what I see daily. Patient brings bag, box, purse/murse, whatever full of supplements in. I look at them one by one. They are almost always junk, especially the Costco purchases (and Amazon… and sometimes even the ones that the vitamin clerk at Whole Foods recommended with their zero certifications or training 🤫🤣).
Here’s what I’m looking at:
👉🏼 First, is it a tablet or gummy…Almost always 🗑. Gummies are just candy. I know we want them to be more…they aren’t. And tablets are more complicated. The tableting process can destroy the vitamin & tablets are hard to break down, amongst other things.
👉🏼Second, I look at “Other ingredients”. These are fillers, binders, colors, etc.. If you see a long list… 🏃♂️(seriously, you’ll need the exercise to detox that junk 😆). It shouldn’t have colors in it, BHA/BHT, Titanium Dioxide, etc. Centrum is the WORST- please throw that junk in the 🗑.
👉🏼Finally, I look at what Vitamins are in it (ignore the RDA, also a waste). Keep in mind that they may have zero of what is claimed on label in it (supplements are not regulated)…but assuming they do, the forms may be useless or poor forms.
Examples:
💊 ergocalciferol (D2), 👎🏼. You need Cholecalciferol (D3).
💊 B12- hydroxy and cyanocobalamin in oral forms 👎🏼. You need Methyl or Adenosylcobalamin.
😂 Enzymes and probiotics together. 😂 Smooth marketing peeps.
💊 Or shelf-stable fish oils. 😶…fish and fish oils go rancid. Would you leave fish you cooked on the counter for a month??
💊 Folic acid- toxic if you have an MTHFR mutation, like myself.
💊 Ferrous Fumarate or Gluconate (constipating forms, choose glycinate/bisglycinate)
So, that’s my soap-box today peeps. Happy Tuesday! ~ 🤗 Dr. G
