Sodium helps your body maintain proper fluid balance. However, most people consume many times the amount of sodium needed, which contributes to elevated blood pressure. A low salt diet means less than 2000mg of sodium per day. One teaspoon of salt contains 2300 mg of sodium. Try experimenting with herbs and spices, avoiding store bought salad dressings, and avoiding processed meats to reduce your sodium intake.

Here are some great healthy tips from CVC's Nutritionist, Sue!
- When serving your main meal, fill at least half of your plate with salad or vegetables.
- Restaurants often have extravagant portions so when eating out, put half of your meal in a to-go before starting your meal to cut down on your calorie intake.
- Don't confuse thirst for hunger. Be sure to drink sufficient amounts of water throughout the day.

Adding nuts to your diet is beneficial!

Although nuts tend to be high in fat, it is the good kind of fats, which can actually lower insulin resistance, which means that it helps to lower your blood sugar. In addition, since they are high in fat, they help keep you full, and prevent hunger between meals, which in turn can help you avoid sugary snacks often consumed between meals. Choose walnuts, almonds, cashews, pecans, macadamia nuts, brazil nuts. If you do not have any allergies to nuts, make them a regular part of your daily diet.

A useful tip from CVC's nutrionist, Sue Ayersman: start your meal with a vegetable broth or warm tea. It will take the edge off your appetite and help you to eat a smaller, healthier amount during your meal.

Here is a tip from CVC's Nutritionist, Sue Ayersman: Adults need about 32 grams of fiber a day for good health, but the reality is that most people do not get enough. The average American consumes only about 10 to 15 grams a day. A product called psyllium is worth considering and can be consumed by taking Metamucil, available at any grocery or drug store. Although psyllium has long been used for constipation, several scientific studies have shown that consuming a low-fat diet and just 10.2 grams of psyllium daily can reduce the risk of heart disease by significantly lowering cholesterol levels.
