This is CO-REGULATION

When I was earlier in my parenting journey I had no idea how important this was- for connection and mental health. I didn't realize that when I focused here everything went better and felt better- my kiddo's picky eating was better, my binge eating was much less, my anxiety was better.

Much of my client work (and my family work) includes co-regulation strategies because raising an intuitive eater requires listening to your body. If you or your child are dysregulated it's nearly impossible to listen to your body. So we connect, we slow down and it lets us accomplish goals faster while feeling at peace.

That's the difference between forcing a kid to try a no thank you bite or disagreeing with your partner over the food expectations. By connecting, you regulate yourself, you release oxytocin, lower cortisol and help your kid do the same.

My work with families is so much more than what to serve, and I always love to see how they transform through our time together. To see parents on the same page, kids helping with meals and communicating their needs, feeling confident enough to try new foods, parents being more patient and listening to their own bodies. I know these families are stronger than when we started and I know that strong families lead to stronger communities which is something I think we can all agree is a good thing.

Do you use co-regulation at home or in your work??

Dear Mamas, If You're Still Trying to Force Just One More Bite...There's a Better Way 🦖

I know it comes from love and wanting your kids to be healthy! But coercing more bites often fuels unwanted power struggles. The wonderful news? There ARE effective alternatives that nurture balanced eating habits WITHOUT the bargaining, threats or resentment under the surface!

First, release any fantasies that they'll spontaneously start enjoying everything overnight (I had to say bye to that fairy tale with my crew too!). Behavioral science shows slow, repeated neutral exposure tailored to your child's unique personality and palate expands comfort zones more than pressured pleas ever could!

Drop a ❤️ below if peaceful, effective strategies sound good for your family too! My insider system for transforming picky eaters through psychology, not pressure unlocks lasting change. Let's hop off the stressful hamster wheel of fighting over foods! There's SO much hope, mama!

"Seriously... hear me out

Even if it's something they love, or something they used to eat comments like this are actually a form of pressure. 🤦🏼‍♀️But Courtney if I don't say anything they'll say they're done and not eat enough and be hungry in 5 minutes. I've got to remind them.

💁🏼‍♀️That's super helpful information to have, and what it actually says about the meal time is that you need better boundaries before during and after -- not that they need reminders. Be sure to swipe through to see what your kids hear when you ask them to take an extra bite and how you can handle that conversation a little better.

If you are craving more support and tactical guidance on ending those meal time struggles, let's work together. You can send me a DM to see how we might tackle your goals for your kiddo or drop a 💪🏻 below and I'll send you a message.

"Drop a 🚨 if you’ve ever felt stuck & wanted to change a system

The passion I felt when I realized just how many families needed additional support lit🔥 under me.

Really, it felt like burning rage but I now know it was a strong passion for more.

You see, throughout my life I witnessed multiple situations where families didn't get the support or guidance they needed. I’ve known what it is to feel stuck or lost.

I felt it at 15 when my then boyfriend had a feeding tube placed after a traumatic assault.

I felt it at 22 when I picked up my entire life and started from scratch

I felt it at 25 & 26 when I didn’t get into the internship I wanted

I felt it at 29 when I experienced the stress of being a working mom with a newborn.

I felt it at 33 when my oldest’s daycare closed and I was 🤰🏼, forced to become a WAHM with a toddler. Or trying to manage an intense fellowship at the same time while losing all the structure I used to have in the hospital.

I felt it earlier this year when I was diagnosed with severe ADHD, and have spent months processing the fact that my brain is different than others and what that means.

But I’ve channeled that stuck feeling, and all of the creative solutions I used to push through those moments, to create this business. To create a place where parents get the higher level of support and guidance around food and nutrition I know they deserve.

And those points in years past were hard & scary, but I never stopped and this moment right here - is my reward. Standing so firmly in my purpose, helping hundreds of families and on a mission to help thousands.

I’m so happy you’ve found your way here, and I hope you find yourself feeling encouraged, supported and loved here in this space.

‘Dinner is the hardest meal for us. It feels like a battle every night and then my partner and I are frustrated with each other because we disagree on how to handle this.’

When I heard this from Nicole, I knew exactly what questions I needed to ask to figure out our cause and the right solution.

When I think about a peaceful family meal at the end of the day, what’s on the table is rarely as important as who’s around the table and the memories shared. Family dinners are about connecting and closing out the day well. With that in mind, your first priority should be connecting with your family not pressuring everyone to get two bites of chicken and one piece of broccoli before they get some ice cream. Once you address how everyone feels at the table, you’ll decrease the stress and make each bite easier and more enjoyable.

If you’d like more support on handling this, be sure to hit follow to keep learning.

Courtney, my 8 year old is obsessed with sweets. I can’t keep them in the house but she just keeps asking about them and then her grandparents serve them to her and she eats junk until she’s sick to her stomach.

I know it can be so disheartening when you see your kiddo seem out of control around a food that’s ‘unhealthy’ or ‘junk’ but restricting actually isn’t the way to ditch the obsession.

They are actually sending you a message that you need to loosen your grip a bit. It’s telling you that they feel conflicted about what they enjoy eating and what they think you want them to eat.

Take some time to serve the foods they like alongside the more nutritious foods you want them to eat more of and don’t put restrictions on finishing their protein or veggies first. Give them space to explore the right balance for them.

And, you’ll likely feel some anxiety while watching them eat the sweets more often but I want you to remind yourself that you are working on their long term relationship with food, not just tonight’s dinner.

If you’d like more support on handling this, be sure to hit follow to keep learning.

Is this something you’ve worried about??

First up, let’s take a breath. A couple quick reframes for you:

-Health is not determined solely by how many veggies your kid eats
-Your worth as a parent is not determined by what food you serve your kids
-A healthy family system around food will look different for each family - for each of our unique needs, preferences and constraints. There’s not a perfect plan you are supposed to follow. There is no gold star to earn.

If you’d like ongoing support while you help your family with their nutrition and relationship with food, I’d love to help.

We can have a chat over coffee to see how we can work together.

I just want them to be healthy

Yes, I know you do - but it’s more than just the size of your child or how many veggies they eat.

Health is complex, and we can improve our health by working on one category at a time. This makes it more manageable but also less about restriction.

Lately I’ve been focusing on sleep for myself and fiber intake for the whole family. What’s an area you’d like to focus on?

Have you asked yourself these questions before?

If not, it’s okay. Let’s do it now. If you have some time to jot down notes, great. If not let’s start with a mental check in on them.

For me, and many of my clients, having kids has made me shine a light on lots of areas of my life where I want to do better.

Sometimes we tell ourselves that watching what we eat or wanting to have a different body is normal so we focus more on how to change our body to make it look the way we think it should instead of learning how to appreciate our body and care for it with more grace.

Or we say our kid will eventually like veggies, but all kids prefer kid foods so I shouldn’t expect much.

But none of those actually make us feel good, or better. We still doubt, question, worry.

If these questions highlighted some issues you’d like to work on, I have a great book list to get you started in your learning journey. It’s totally free and has books for each of those categories, just DM or comment ‘BOOK LIST’ and I’ll send it to you.

Knowing what to say is a huge piece of my sessions with parents. You know what foods you want your kid to eat, you know that you need to involve them in the process but they SHUT YOU DOWN so quickly. It’s like a door slams in your face - then what? Do you open the door to ask again or is that pressure?

Here’s what I want you to do-
Lead with acceptance and curiosity. That’s the energy and attitude we want our kids to have around new or non-preferred foods so we need to demonstrate that. Remember, we set the tone.

Ask open ended questions around how to improve the experience for them. This allows them to describe foods and preferences in their own words and can give you some insight into how foods can be adjusted to get them comfortable trying new items.

If you try this I’d love to know how it goes!

Can you see yourself in this mom’s story?

If yes, keep reading.

I want you to make a list of the foods your kiddo loves (no judgment of if they’re healthy or not), and the foods they will sometimes accept. Next, grab my free meal planner at the link in my bio and turn those favorites into balanced meals and snacks for your kiddo.

If you’ve got a bit of extra brain power (you know, the coffee was extra strong today or maybe you got a full night of sleep) jot down some notes for how you can you some of those base ingredients on your kiddos menu to feed the rest of the family.

For example if your kiddo loves tacos with ground beef but struggles with other recipes that use ground beef, cook up a larger portion of plain ground beef and then divide it - make some with their favorite taco sauce and add the rest to some veggie loaded marinara for an easy bolognese. You can serve your kiddos preferred protein by reheating your leftover taco meat on bolognese night. Everyone is well fed and you’ve used your prep time wisely.

I’ve found that while you’re working to increase the foods your kiddo will accept if we keep their stress levels down and their bodies well fed their brains are much more open to trying new foods.

If you want to learn more about how this could work for your family, set up a complimentary coffee chat with me at the link in my bio.

Who’s kiddos could use a bit more greens 🥬 in their life?!

This recipe is a huge hit in our house and helps us get in spinach and kale easily.

I love that this recipe has fiber, protein and fat so it’s filling for all of us and gives us the nutrition we need to feel strong and healthy.

About Courtney

I’m a Pediatric Registered Dietitian with a passion for helping families find bliss around the table. As a mom myself, I understand the concerns that can come with feeding your child—we often ask ourselves questions like, Are they getting enough? Am I providing them with nutrients they need for healthy development? Am I promoting healthy habits?

These concerns are totally normal, and I’m here to tell you that you’re not alone and are probably doing better than you think! Improving a child’s relationship with food starts with changing the way the family looks at mealtime, and I’m here to equip you with the knowledge, tools, and resources you need to nourish your littles today and set them up for a lifetime of healthy choices.

I also have extensive experience supporting patients who require tube feedings. I have transitioned dozens of patients successfully over to blended tube feedings for more physiologic nutrition and feeding times as well as faster time to eating my mouth.
