This is a great example of why I tell my patients car modifications (like hand controls or a left-foot accelerator) are so important! Glad nobody was hurt in this case but imagine if a child was standing on the other side of the wall…
As an amputee , I feel like I can safely drive a car with my prosthesis and I know many of my patients feel the same. However, it is the one time that something goes wrong, or you have to react instantly to someone else’s mistake that could cause your prosthesis to get stuck or slow your ability to react by fractions of a second. In the worst-case scenario this could be the difference between avoiding an accident or someone getting hurt/killed. In a less than critical scenario you might be left with major liability to damage like this story.
Even if the accident weren’t your fault, if it is determined that your car was not properly equipped for safe operation based on your prosthesis use, then you could be held liable for damages that were not your fault at all.
If your prosthesis could effect your risk in an accident, it is well worth the cost to make the appropriate modifications. If nothing else, it will allow you to sleep better at night when thinking about the what-if. Or, when defending yourself to a judge if the unimaginable were to happen.
At fault or not, appropriate car modifications are a critical factor for amputees who find themselves dealing with an accident!
A Casper man lost control of his prosthetic leg on Monday and ran his vehicle through a convenience store. The damages to the building were extensive, according to the police.
