Quad sets are often recommended in physical therapy, especially for knee rehabilitation, because they help activate the quadriceps muscle without putting too much strain on the joint. However, they have their limitations that make them less than ideal for everyone.
First off, quad sets involve isometric contractions, meaning you’re tightening the muscle without actually moving the joint. While this can be beneficial for maintaining muscle engagement, it doesn’t really help improve strength through a range of motion. Strengthening muscles through dynamic movements is generally more effective for functional recovery.
Another thing to consider is that quad sets can be a bit boring and repetitive. Patients might find them less motivating compared to exercises that involve actual movement or activities that mimic real-life actions, which can lead to disengagement from the rehab process.
