That’s my dermatoscope: one of my favorite tools during your appointment.

It lets me see beyond what the naked eye can catch. With magnification and specialized lighting, I can evaluate structures under the surface of your skin in real time.

Here’s what I’m assessing:

🍪Pigment patterns
→ Helps distinguish benign moles from concerning lesions

🩸Vascular structures
→ Clues for diagnosing things like angiomas, skin cancers, and other skin conditions

🪮Follicular details
→ Useful for hair loss conditions, follicular infections, and scalp issues

Kids get a lot of skin issues: weird lumps and bumps, infections, newly developing chronic conditions, contagious conditions, etc. It’s important to get an accurate diagnosis right away so that it doesn’t become a bigger problem.

I like to make it as fun as possible. Sometimes when I see a kid they are immediately thinking It’s going to hurt. Whatever it is, even showing them my derm light can make them nervous. So we take a little time- talk about them, their toys, their likes/dislikes- even before I take a look at their skin. It makes me happy that when I leave, they have an accurate diagnosis, treatment plan, and a little less fear about being seen.

We often do family appointments where I will see parents first, and then we do kids last (depending on the needs) but they’re in their own space. Having the whole family seen together can be bonding and save a lot of time. No waiting rooms. No pressure.

Vaseline vs Aquaphor vs Cerave Healing Ointment: what you should know 💡

Melasma isn’t just about the sun ☀️

Yes, UV exposure is a major trigger, but one of the most overlooked drivers is HEAT 🔥

• Hot yoga
• Saunas & steam rooms
• Cooking over a hot stove
• Even just living in a hot climate
• Red light therapy that gets hot

Heat increases vascular activity and stimulates melanocytes, which can worsen pigmentation, even if you’re wearing sunscreen.

Other key drivers:
• Hormones (pregnancy, OCPs, HRT)
• Visible light (yep, even indoors)
• Genetics
• Skin inflammation

If you’re treating melasma and not addressing heat exposure, you may be missing a big piece of the puzzle.

SPF is essential! but so is staying cool 🕶️

A skin biopsy can sound scary. Making it as easy as possible for you is one of my priorities.
First, we numb you with a tiny (trust me it is SO tiny) needle. It takes about 5 seconds and then you feel nothing.
Then we shave the area to be sent in for evaluation at the lab. Again, you don’t feel that.
Then we make sure you’re not bleeding and tell you how to care for the area.
Sometimes we have to do a deeper shave or a biopsy that requires sutures. This is less frequently and we will discuss thoroughly beforehand.
Don’t let a fear of a biopsy deter you from getting something checked! It could save your life. 🔎
