Why do people develop bunions?

There isn't one answer, but there are several contributing factors that cause bunions.
Genetic predisposition is a big factor, as you are more likely to develop a bunion if your parents or close relatives also have bunions.

Another is foot structure. People with low arches are more prone to bunions as they can place extra pressure on the big toe joint area.

Ill-fitting shoes, like narrow or tight shoes, are another culprit. They can squeeze the big toe joint and cause inflammation and pain.

Since bunions are a progressive condition, it's important that you get in touch with a foot care specialist if you are experiencing any discomfort or pain associated with a bunion.

Avoiding ingrown toenails is essential for maintaining healthy feet. Here are some tips to prevent this common issue:
✔️ Trim your toenails straight across
✔️ Wear shoes that fit properly
✔️ Practice good foot hygiene by keeping your feet clean and dry
✔️ Use protective padding or see a podiatrist if you are prone to getting ingrown toenails.

Our podiatrists want to remind you that you should never attempt to remove an ingrown toenail yourself, which could increase your risk for infections.

What are common causes of heel pain?

Our podiatrists commonly see patients with heel pain suffer from the following conditions:
▪️ Plantar fasciitis - the inflammation of the plantar fascia tissue that connects the heel bone to the toes
▪️ Achilles tendinitis - the inflammation of the Achilles tendon that connects the calf muscles to the heel bone.
▪️ Heel spurs - commonly associated with plantar fasciitis, these are bony growths that form on the heel bone due to excessive pressure or repetitive stress.

If you experience heel pain, whether when you first wake up or after exercise, it's important to consult with a foot doctor to get the most effective treatments!
