In 1896, Benedict Lust, often called the father of naturopathy, opened what is widely considered America’s first health food store in New York City.

Originally known as the Kneipp Store, it offered herbs, natural remedies, and products based on the hydrotherapy teachings of Sebastian Kneipp.

Around the same time, Lust founded the American School of Naturopathy and helped formalize naturopathic medicine in the United States.

Long before the modern wellness industry, naturopathic doctors were already shaping the natural foods movement.

The 1910 Flexner Report, supported by industrial interests tied to the Rockefeller Foundation...helped shift medicine toward a pharmaceutical model while fueling propaganda that portrayed naturopathic and traditional doctors as “quacks,” a stigma that persisted for decades. However it's because of Naturopathic doctors that we still have natural food stores today and preserved natural medicine over the years even with all the stigma & propaganda

Washington became the first state to license Naturopathic Doctors in 1919. Oregon followed in 1927 and Arizona in 1935. Over 100 years later we are still fighting for other states to follow suit. Currently only 26 states recognize us as primary care providers. Much of the legislative resistance stems from antiquated laws and a rigid mentality rooted in a total lack of education regarding what Naturopathic Doctors actually do.

​The rise of online naturopathic coaching schools only adds to the chaos, creating confusion for anyone unaware of the vast division between these two programs. Naturopathic Doctors attend medical school. We spend years dissecting cadavers and mastering the same basic sciences as any medical doctor. Our training covers 95% of the same disciplines as MD or DO students, though we further specialize in herbs, nutrition, acupuncture, and physical medicine.

​While we do not perform major surgery, we still do minor surgery & our curriculum is incredibly dense and often more rigorous than conventional paths. Despite this, we remain unrecognized due to a lack of governmental responsibility. This ignorance is fueled by propaganda pushers who fear a shift toward prevention and a healthcare model that operates outside the traditional insurance complex.

What you can do as a friend or supporter is contact your local legislature regarding issues with naturopathic physicians and even nurse practitioners and supporting laws that give us freedom to practice outside conventional routes.
