As we close out , we’re reminded: Prevention starts with understanding how childhood experiences shape adult outcomes.
Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are common and powerful.
ACEs include:
- physical, sexual and emotional/verbal abuse
- physical and emotional neglect
- household dysfunction, such as parental separation/divorce, witnessing domestic violence, a household member with substance use disorders, mental illness and incarceration
The more ACEs a person has, the more likely they are to also have negative long-term health effects, like mental and physical illness as an adult.
In South Carolina, approximately 3 in 5 adults report experiencing at least one ACE as a child.
This is where we come in.
Our 2-day, in-person Training-of-Trainers program prepares child- and family-serving professionals to teach others about ACEs and build resilience in their communities.
In this program, you’ll learn how early experiences impact lifelong health, and how to interrupt that cycle with practical, prevention-focused strategies.
By taking the training, you also join a statewide network working to strengthen families, support kids and create safer, healthier outcomes across our state.
The next program is May 20-21, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., at our downtown office in Columbia.
Registration closes on May 11. Space is limited to 25 attendees. CEUs are available.
