The Gift of Sight program, a collaborative initiative between Roanoke Valley Center for Sight (RVCS) and Vistar Eye Center, provides free or reduced-cost ocular surgeries for individuals
who have no insurance in our service area.

This program is made possible by the dedicated volunteer efforts of medical professionals from both RVCS and Vistar Eye Center, all committed to restoring vision and improving the quality of life for those in need.

July is UV Safety Month! Protect Your Eyes from Harmful Rays 🕶️☀️

Did you know that prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays can increase your risk of serious eye conditions like cataracts, macular degeneration, and even eye cancer? UV protection isn’t just for your skin — it’s crucial for your eyes too!

Here’s how to keep your eyes safe this summer and all year round:
✔️ Wear sunglasses that block UVA and UVB rays
✔️ Wear a wide-brimmed hat when outdoors
✔️ Avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours (10 AM – 4 PM)
✔️ Don’t forget UV protection even on cloudy days!

Technology is always advancing in ophthalmology. One of the greatest recent innovations is the Light Adjustable Lens (LAL), which Vistar began offering cataract patients in 2023. 👁️‍🗨️

The LAL is the only lens that can be adjusted after surgery, and because it can, the technology gives patients the opportunity to preview their vision before settling on a final prescription for their lens. Adjustments are made during a series of in-office visits when UV light treatments are delivered until patients feel they can see their best. Once they can, a final lock-in treatment is applied.
