By addressing the emotions instead of downplaying them, you will show your spouse that you truly see her. If she doesn’t feel seen by you, you cannot protect that woman. Spouses will often tell me they know that their partner is about to slip before it happens because they can feel it coming. This is usually because the addict is experiencing some sort of pain, and they may not even realize it. Learning to recognize and address that pain is a key part of the recovery process.

Halloween chihuahua = not scary. Recovery = not scary. Putting in the work for recovery does take time and effort but it doesn't need to be a scary process. Find those who you can reach out to and be open with, and rely on that support as you learn to overcome your addiction.
