For anyone struggling with a spouse or loved one in recovery, I want you to know that healing is possible. It can take some time but does get better, especially as you see them getting the social skills to hear your pain.

It's one of the questions I frequently hear when I first meet with someone. They want to know why they can't stop or why this has been going on and on. The answer is the addiction cycle. They are stuck in a pattern and have to learn to make changes that will break the cycle and help them to better manage themselves.

Our brains want to find a way to make us feel better. For addicts, this means they have usually created a super highway to those positive feelings when they turn to their addiction. Part of recovery is changing the direction of that highway and learning how to turn to real, healthy relationships that can eventually replace those addictive habits.

In a marriage relationship, two people have an accountability to have no secret private life. Anytime one individual engages in a double life they are accountable to that other person. For healing to occur, it's all about truth telling, honesty, and accountability, which opens the door to a whole host of other social skills that you'll be able to improve through recovery.

Starting recovery can be a little like walking down a bumpy path or a trail full of rocks. The way ahead is hard and not always a straight line. As you practice holding yourself accountable and have people around to support you, the path will improve. Research shows that relying on willpower alone to not act out is not enough. Real recovery requires that you also work on understanding and managing your emotions, learning how to connect, and addressing the root causes of your addition. That is what will help to make lasting change.

Individuals who struggle with po*******hy addiction have spent years stuck in this cycle, not knowing how to manage one or more of these areas of life: physical, emotional, spiritual, sexual, or relational. Pain in one of these areas or having them get out of balance creates a high-risk time for a slip or relapse. So an important part of recovery is learning to recognize when you are feeling pain in one of these areas and then how to address it.
