How do I cure anxiety disorder?
I love this question, because it is the right question. It is filled with hope! It anticipates the solution. There is a cure for anxiety disorder.
Anxiety is not a terminal illness. It is more like the lack of a muscle, and with the proper exercises we can build that muscle of Emotional Resilience.
One problem is that people want just a quick fix, as though anxiety were a third arm that needed to be simply amputated so that you’d be normal like everyone else. THIS IS FALSE!
There is nothing attaching you to anxiety, no personal trait that condemns you to a life with social anxiety. It really is just a mental muscle that needs training.
It’s like an infant that can’t yet walk saying to the adults in the room, “I have immobility.” Everyone knows that that child can learn to walk, it’s going to take a lot of practice, a lot of falling down, getting back up, and encouragement from others. They have to exercise the appropriate muscles to gain that walking ability.
So the desired ability with social anxiety is to be able to walk through life without letting anxious feelings hold us back from trying and achieving our goals in life. This is very possible for all of us, you included.
Interestingly enough, the path to emotional resilience begins with defining for yourself your top 2 values, and then establishing 2 SMART goals that help you move toward your values. Here is a radio show specifically about Values and Goals. https://buff.ly/46tJzBw
