Kick Aplastic Anemia With Ash

Kick Aplastic Anemia With Ash Follow along on Ashley’s journey to Kick Aplastic Anemia.

This weekend Ash received the Mothers Day gift she was hoping for! Her medical team gave her the green light to move back home!!! So of course she did just that and is back in Southern Utah! She still has a lot of road to travel for recovery but she is beyond excited to be doing it from her home. Being allowed to move home early is of course a good sign on how well she is progressing. Her LDS Hospital team will still manage all her care and treatment. Some will be through St. George regional, and then a return visit to SL every other week.

Ash is still immune compromised, so she has a lot of the same rules for a while. limited time outside, mask and gloves when out, limited contact with people, etc. but grateful to follow those from the comfort of her home!!

Looking back to December when Ash was Life Flighted to SL and so many unknowns about the future, it was smiles and tears of joy getting her and her family back home!!!

Another milestone celebrated with many more to come!

Today Ash hit another milestone!
Today marks day 60 since her transplant. From the beginning the Dr’s had told her that day 60 is when most turn the corner and steadily feel better. Ash has been progressing well. Her new bone marrow has been producing cells and has all her counts up, some even up to normal levels. She still has some lingering side effects from the treatment, including a beautiful bald head, but she is grateful to be on the right track.

Sorry for the long gap in posting updates.
Back on the 6th ash’s new bone marrow started producing cells and her white count rose from 0 to 0.1. That Thursday another good sign, it was the first day day in weeks that Ash didn’t need a transfusion of platelets, she made it til Friday!
Her white counts continued to rise and on Monday, after 5 weeks of residing in LDS Hospital she was released. Stetson was beyond excited to get his mama, walk her to her new temporary residence. Ash still has multiples visits to LDS but she is happy to be out of the hospital. Ash is still battling the on going nausea and over all weakness.
Ash has to stay in Salt Lake for a few more months to receive ongoing treatment and monitoring.

Late Thursday night Ash became a little more like her mom, in a very physical way!!! The transplant took place in Ash’s hospital room and Steph was able to be with her! The Red Cross delivered the bone marrow to Ash’s room and it was given to her through her central line. Ash did great and had no reactions to the transplant.
Steph was admitted and spent the night across the hallway from Ash. Steph of course is very sore and has a few scars to give a small glimpse of what Moms will do for their daughters.

Yesterday was a day of rest for Ash, well and Steph also!!
Today is the first of two days of high dose chemo for Ash. The pharmacist explained to Ash that each of her next two chemo doses will be around 10x’s of what is considered a normal dose. They have told her this next week will be a rough one, if not the roughest one on her journey.

The day we have been waiting for is finally here, Transplant day!!! Week one is in the books and all the pre transplant process has been completed!!! Ash has definitely started to feel the effects of 5 days of chemo, but she pushed through it!Yesterday was full body radiation, which was pretty tough on her. They had to stop the process and it took a few hours to get the side effects under control. They were able to get through the majority of her dose and left it up to Ash to finish it all or not. In true Ashley fashion she gave them a “let’s do it” and was able to get that completed.

Steph is in surgery this morning, we’ll let ya know how it goes!!

Update on Steph, She made it out of her 3+ hour surgery. The Dr’s say everything went good and explained they drilled 400 holes in her hips to draw out around 2 liters of bone marrow.
More to come today, as we get even closer to transplant!

Ash had some pretty cute visitors today! Thanks to Tia, Kelsie & Rosie for bringing some sunshine today💕

Last week had its ups and downs for Ash. Ash ended up back in the ER and was again admitted with some active internal bleeding. After being admitted for a couple of days they were able to get it under control. They removed 5.3 L of blood from her abdomen, which helped relieve some of her pain.
Monday she was able to meet with many of her transplant team to learn some details of her process.
Ash will be admitted Tuesday morning for her 5-6 week stay in LDS. She will undergo all the preparation treatments, including high dose chemo and full body radiation.
On the morning of the 22nd Steph (Mom) will start her day with a 2.5 hr surgery for the Bone Marrow retrieval. It will be processed that day and then transfused into Ash that same afternoon. Steph should be able to be with Ash while she receives the transplant.
Ash is at the start of what we expect to be the most difficult stretch of her journey. Last night she was able to enjoy an evening with family. She was able to get all packed for her lengthy stay in the hospital, and treasured the opportunity to tuck Stetson in for what will be the last time for around a month or so, but what will feel like an eternity.

Today we are grateful for medical advances and more amazing medical professionals! Part of Ashley’s treatment plan includes high dose chemotherapy which has many side effects, including making it so she would not be able to have more children. We are grateful for an incredible Doctor and his team, this time at the U of U. He was able to harvest 28 eggs and develop 17 of those into embryos. It’s another 5 days before Ash & Chance will find out how many of the 17 are able to be frozen and give them the possibility for Stetson to have a brother and/or sister once they make it through this challenging time. Another bright spot in Ashley’s otherwise dark and difficult journey.

We received some exciting news regarding Ashley’s donor. Family testing came back with a match. Her mom, Stephanie is going to be her donor. In Ashley’s case, this is the best possible scenario, as she is female and family, which gives a lesser chance for rejection.

On November 14th 2023 Ashley started throwing up blood. She was rushed to the hospital where many tests were done. Ashley’s platelets never went back to a normal level. She was sent home with more questions than answers. A few weeks later she was again rushed to the hospital by ambulance, where she was diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia. She was then life flighted to LDS hospital in Salt Lake City. She was then told she was In need of a bone marrow transplant. Her and her little family will be relocated to Salt Lake for a minimum of 6 months. They are currently at their home in St. George while awaiting donor results and more testing.
