There is so much more we now know about how the pelvic floor functions than we did only a few years ago. It doesn’t work like a biceps muscle. Time and intentional rest and intentional effort are the best tools for healing after birth. Even with a “perfect” birth it will take months to truly be healed.

I would love to see every woman offered pelvic floor therapy after birth. I honestly believe every woman should have an understanding of how her body handled pregnancy and birth based on her own experience. She should be assessed based on the type of birth she had, any complications, her genetic tissue quality, current symptoms, and risks.

She should be evaluated for her current activity tolerance and her goal activities. Not every woman has the same history, time availability, support, financial resources, physical demands and more. It all matters and affects her recovery! Some women will only need some reassurance and guidance. Other women will find their bodies have changed a lot and will benefit from more support and frequent treatment.

Every woman deserves to know about her body and how to best recover so she can enjoy this new chapter in her life!

Social media can be a tough place to give really good solid information. Most pelvic floor conditions and situations require nuance, so I’m going to do a series covering some frequent questions. The answer to all of them is “It depends”! But, we’ll also give some more details because knowledge is key to understanding and making the best decisions for each individual. I dragged myself out of bed early this morning to catch the sunrise. (Don’t worry, I went back home and got into bed so that my daughter could make me breakfast in bed!) Being in nature always makes me in awe of the beauty that surrounds us. I am also in awe of the women I treat. They each have a story of hardship and pain, but they rise to meet the challenges. They love their families and friends so much. There truly is so much power in women who make the best of themselves and give so much to those around them. I hope every woman enjoys this beautiful day!
