Have you ever heard of - Superficial Keratectomy (SK)
This procedure is performed at our St. George location by Nicholas Behunin, M.D., our fellowship-trained, board-certified Cornea Specialist.
Procedure Overview:
Superficial keratectomy (SK) is a procedure that removes the most anterior layer of the cornea, known as the epithelial tissue.
How It’s Done:
Using a surgical blade, the surgeon scrapes away the damaged outer layer of the cornea.
A diamond-tip burr may be used to gently clear away the loose or damaged epithelium.
After the Procedure:
Once the cornea is clear, a bandage contact lens is placed for comfort and healing. Patients are then prescribed postoperative antibiotic drops to help prevent infection.
Patients will return for follow-up visits to
ensure the cornea is healing properly
Insurance Coverage: Typically covered by most insurance companies when deemed medically necessary.
