Pathway Hospice & Palliative Care

Pathway Hospice & Palliative Care Southern Utah's only comprehensive Palliative Care Provider. Providing a broad range of services tha The doctors told us that every day was a gift of life.

About us and who we are... My parents lived in Santa Clara, UT for 25 years. When my Mom got sick about 18 years ago, we had 3 young children and a family-owned business to run in Las Vegas. So, we brought my parents to our home, where we could care for my Mom until she got better. Shortly after, we discovered that she had Stage 4 Lung Cancer that had already metastasized to her liver, lymph nodes, and brain. They were surprised she was still hanging on. We were devastated!! No-one in our family had ever experienced death of a close family member. The doctor sent over a Hospice Company that literally only had concerns for my Mom and my family. I say that because we had a little meeting where they asked questions about us, our hopes, our needs, our bucket lists…
They educated us on the expectations of her disease, but then helped us focus on living! My Mom was very holistic, coming from England. We were provided options of therapies that my Mom and our family chose. We did Foot Zoning, Reflexology, Aromatherapy, we even tried this foot soaking machine that was supposed to draw toxins from your feet. They did provide all the minimum Medicare requirements like medical equipment, supplies, Social Workers, Chaplain, and an emergency kit of medications, all at no cost to us, but my Mom never needed them. She ended up living 5 ½ months completely pain free without a single dose of Lorazepam, Haldol, or Morphine! No-one came in and started a plan of care… All of us made her plan of care. It’s important to understand that we are not only holistic, we are about supporting what is important to the patient and their family. Palliative Care takes into consideration the patient and family choices so that the family is left without regret when the time comes. We did not have that same experience when my Dad was put on hospice here in St. George. The experience was much different. No-one met with our family to discuss what we wanted, what he needed, what we were hoping for. A Care Plan was made by a nurse and protocol took over thereafter. The nurses, social workers, etc. were lovely, but there was very little else, and no other therapies or support offered. When my Dad was diagnosed, we decided to move my family up here to take care of him. We bought a home and moved in on July 1. My father passed away 3 days before we arrived on June 29 and only 3 days after being placed on hospice. The Care Plan was written to ensure he was never in any pain. …He had neuropathy, he wasn’t in any pain, but no-one knew that because no-one asked. We did not get to help make his Plan of Care. They read medical records that seemed to indicate pain might be likely, so a high dose medication regiment was implemented. By the time we realized what was happening, it was too late. He passed away, alone in a room. His story is more elaborate and detailed if I took more time, but the ending is the same. He passed too quickly, before family could come to say their goodbyes. We were here, without a purpose and overwhelmed with regret of what we should have done. We opened Pathway Hospice & Palliative Care because everyone deserves more than Medicare’s minimum requirements being offered by lovely nurses and social workers. We do more. Much more, because that is how Palliative Care was intended to be, but not yet being offered in this community. We realize that most of the doctors and this community do not know us yet. They only know what every other hospice is offering so it doesn’t matter which one you choose, they are all the same…but not us, we are very different! Our Palliative Care team takes an interest in knowing what the family wants and what will bring the patient the highest quality of life for as long as they are living. Families who choose palliative care live longer.
“Those who received palliative care lived more than four months longer than those who didn’t.”
Citation: Cancer Patients and Palliative Care (Healthline.com)
I do hope this helps you understand our passion a little better. 😊 We truly do want a better experience for every senior in this community. People don’t know what they are missing out on yet, but we are trying to get the word out. I’d love the opportunity to share some of our heart warming, palliative care experiences since we arrived. Palliative Care is so dynamic that a brochure can never do it justice. I do hope we have the opportunity to work together in the future. We believe that everyone should understand what Palliative care is long before they believe they need it. There are so, so many resources and benefits available that are not being taken advantage of yet, here. We’d like to help seniors in this community access those available resources. If you know of someone in this community that needs a little help, please give them our name and number. Our only purpose for being in St George is to help our seniors enjoy a higher quality of life! Warm regards,
Kaylie Fritzler

We are looking for someone to offer companionship visits to a senior gentleman in need.
They just need to be a friend. Walk with him down to his garage, talk about cars, kids, and other things that are interesting to him.
Maybe 4-6 hours a week divided up any way you choose. We can pay an hourly wage. If you or someone you know is looking for a little extra money, please have them call Pathway Hospice & Palliative Care at: 435-477-6999.
A background screening will be required.

The ideal candidate would be another vibrant person that has their own transportation, and likes to talk.

Please help and share this post, he really needs a friend.

Thank you so much,

“Palliative” -- It’s the type of Health Care that really makes a difference. It can quicken recovery, improve outcomes, and has an incredible ability to improve your quality of life. Great Palliative Care has been proven to improve health, extend life, and make us happier. It’s the power to choose for yourself.

The introduction of Palliative Care has changed health care protocols. From the very youngest of premature births to those in their twilight years, adding a Palliative Plan of Care has extraordinary benefits. Whether we are suffering from a common sickness, or recovering from major surgery, to dealing with a chronic or life limiting condition, allowing Palliative Care to be part of your medical program will improve your situation.

Kaylie and Richard, the Hosts of KDXU’s ElderCare Radio will explore how this part of healthcare can do so much good in our lives. On their Wednesday Morning Radio shows every week, they recommend “You, Be Your Own Best Medical Advocate”, “Be an active and informed participant”, “Assist your Doctor to help you in the ways that are best for you”. Being well informed about medical options, and advocating for the best care possible is important, especially as we age.

This event will give you a broad understanding, give you the tools and information to talk with your physician about upgrading your personal care plan to include additional services that can make life more enjoyable. And this knowledge is useful, as we are helping friends, neighbors, and others in our community, affected by age related medical conditions and are struggling in their daily activities.

We encourage everyone, whether you have a medical condition, know someone that has a medical condition to join us, just come out meet some new friends or visit with old ones as we learn “What Palliative Care Can Be” and “How to Make the Most of Palliative Care For Ourselves And Those We Love And Care For. There will be light refreshments and games to enjoy.

Allow us to explain what makes us different.

Pathway commits far more resources to Patient Care.

We offer more clinical hours per patient week.
That can mean more time to spend with the patient on each visit. Extending the opportunity to develop a relationship and to give a better, more complete, level of care. As a nurse, it means time to fully evaluate, not just the physical conditions but their mental and social issues. Time to just make them feel important and cared for.

We offer a wider array of extra services.
Every Patient is different and we tailor the care to the needs of the patient.

We know that PT, OT and ST may not improve the patient’s physical capabilities, but in hospice they don’t have to, if those services improve the patients outlook, or makes them happy that they aren’t giving up, we can provide it.

We have found that excellent massage therapy is a great way for some patients to relieve anxiety and stress, and can reduce pain. This can allows the patient to reduce their need for pharmaceuticals and reduces the negative results that comes from excessive medications.

We have an expansive Palliative Program
If you understand that Palliative care is extensive pain management, you aren’t wrong, you just don’t yet know what Palliative Care CAN BE. Palliative Care is anything and EVERYTHING that can alleviate a symptom, or be a comfort. Pain isn’t the only symptom that true Palliative care can address. Every patient is unique and there is a whole world of possible palliative cares that can help that patient enjoy their life. We are open to exploring all of them. Traditional options like pet therapy, aroma therapy, music therapy, or more hands on ones, like foot zoning, acupuncture, or lymphatic massage. Pathway Hospice and Palliative Care will help the patient find the things that work best for them.

We support the pursuit of alternative therapies.
Hospice shouldn’t be about giving up, it should be about taking control of the things that we can control and focusing on living the best life possible for as long as possible. We want to encourage hope and happiness. If trying Hyperbaric chambers, or vitamin infusions, or any other possible therapy that someone wants to try, gives them happiness, a sense of purpose, or a feeling of hope, we support that.

We provide services for the Caregiver and the Family. This can be an overwhelming time for everyone who loves and is involved in the care of a patient at the end of life.
We can provide services that relieve the caregiver of some of their daily cares. We’ve sent in housekeepers, to bring the home back up to the caregivers standards so they don’t have the weight of that undone task on their shoulders. We can send Massage therapists to the caregiver. Ask us about some of the things we've done for patients and their families.

Great Palliative Care extends and enhances lives.
Study after study has shown that well executed hospice care and a robust palliative care plan added to hospice extends lives even more AND makes that life more enjoyable.

Because we focus on providing extensive palliative care, in addition to the highest level of clinical care, our patients live longer and have more fulfilling lives. Their caregivers and families are happier, more confident in their ability to care, and have far fewer regrets or questions about whether care was appropriate.

Because our clients have great experiences, we get to be considered a good part of a great life story.

We want more people to have great life experiences, and we often get to share in those experiences because we do Hospice Different.

We are Eldercare Radio

Since the beginning COVID we were asked by KDXU (94.9FM and 890AM) the leading news, talk, and information radio station in Southern Utah to host a weekly radio program focused on improving the lives of our seniors. For the past year and half, every Wednesday at 8:30am, we have shared our experiences, our hopes, and our understanding with the community. We are changing what people think of hospice. We are introducing an entirely different perspective, and the community is receiving it.
