Looks harmlessโ€ฆ but itโ€™s not worth the risk.

Bat bites and scratches can be so small they often go unnoticed. Simply handling a bat can expose you to rabies.

If you touched a bat, a child handled one, or you woke up with a bat in your roomโ€”seek medical care immediately.

Rabies is preventable if treated early.

Rabid Bat Confirmed in Southwest Utah

The Southwest Utah Public Health Department has confirmed that a bat found in Washington County tested positive for rabies. This is the first rabid bat identified in Utah this year.

Rabies is rare, but once symptoms begin it is almost always fatal. The good news: prompt medical treatment after an exposure can prevent illness.

Please remember:

โ€ข Never touch bats or other wild animals
โ€ข Bat bites or scratches can be small and may go unnoticed
โ€ข If contact happens, wash the area with soap and water and seek medical care immediately
โ€ข Keep pets up to date on rabies vaccinations

Bats are an important part of our environment, but they should always be admired from a safe distance.

Their smile says everything. ๐Ÿค

Helping protect that smile starts early.

During National Infant Immunization Week, weโ€™re reminding families that childhood vaccines help protect babies and young children from serious diseases so they can keep growing, learning, and thriving.

Staying up to date on recommended immunizations is one of the simplest ways to support a healthy start.

Have questions about vaccines or clinic services? Southwest Utah Public Health Department is here to help.

๐Ÿ’Š That old prescription bottle in the cabinet? This is your reminder.

Safely dispose of unused or expired medications during DEA National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, April 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Unused medications in the home can increase the risk of accidental poisoning, misuse, and overdose. Proper disposal also helps protect our environment.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency notes that flushing or pouring medicines down the drain can allow pharmaceuticals to enter wastewater systems, surface water, and groundwater.

The U.S. Geological Survey also reports pharmaceuticals have been detected in streams and waterways and may impact fish and aquatic life.
