It is back to school season!
For those of us who manage food allergies, an important reminder why action plans are important:

A food allergy action plan is an important tool for individuals who have food allergies, especially in settings such as schools, childcare facilities, or any place where a person may be at risk of exposure to allergens. The plan outlines specific steps to be taken in case of an allergic reaction. Here are some key reasons why a food allergy action plan is important:

1. Emergency Preparedness: Food allergies can lead to severe and potentially life-threatening reactions, such as anaphylaxis. Having an action plan ensures that everyone involved is prepared in case of an allergic reaction. It provides clear instructions on what actions to take, including the use of emergency medication, such as epinephrine auto-injectors (e.g., EpiPen, Auvi-Q, etc).

2. Standardized Communication: An action plan serves as a communication tool between the individual with the food allergy, their caregivers, teachers, school staff, and other relevant personnel. It provides vital information about the specific allergens, symptoms, and appropriate steps to be taken during an allergic reaction.

3. Early Recognition and Intervention: The action plan includes a list of potential allergic symptoms, enabling early recognition of an allergic reaction. By promptly identifying the symptoms, appropriate actions can be taken, potentially preventing the reaction from escalating.

If your plan is not set, make an appointment with us today! Here is a video of Dr. Ahmad sharing more back to school tips:

Feeling frustrated over your allergy symptoms this fall? Are you simply trying to avoid your allergy trigger, or is self-treating with over-the-counter allergy medications not enough to offer relief? We have a treatment option you may want to consider with your doctor - allergen immunotherapy.

What is allergy immunotherapy (AIT)?
• It treats the underlying cause of your allergies.
• AIT is the only treatment option available that changes the immune system so that you no longer react to those things to which you are allergic.
• It makes it possible to be symptom free and not depend on medications such as antihistamines and nasal steroid sprays.

There are two types of AIT:
1.) Allergy shots - Shots are administered in a board-certified allergist’s office once or twice weekly. That schedule will continue for about 6 months. Your allergist increases the level of allergen extract in your injections until the maintenance dose is reached. Once the maintenance dose is reached, you continue once per month until you decide to stop the treatment.
2.) Under-the-tongue tablets - these tablets are first given at a doctor’s office. Then the tablets can be taken at home and are placed under the tongue once a day and dissolve quickly.

If you need allergy testing, or have interest in allergen immunotherapy, give us a call today at 314-205-6600
