Hoping these chickens make it out soon! The only surviving 2/20 on our first batch of eggs.

A hard part of growing up is the part no one sees: the struggle to break through. In nature, the egg hatching process is a vital, grueling struggle. If you peel away the shell for a chick, it won't develop the strength it needs to survive. The resistance of the shell is what builds its muscles and prepares it for the world outside.

Adolescence is our "shell" moment. For our teens, the pressure can feel heavy. They are navigating a world of social media, academic stress, and changing identities. As parents and mentors, our instinct is to "crack the shell" for them, to fix every problem and remove every obstacle.

But mental health isn't about the absence of struggle; it’s about developing the skills to navigate it.

Originally developed to treat complex emotional patterns, DBT is a cognitive-behavioral approach that emphasizes the balance between acceptance and change.

The word "dialectical" means that two seemingly opposite ideas can both be true. In DBT, we work on accepting who you are while simultaneously acknowledging that you need to change your thought patterns and behaviors to reach your goals.

DBT focuses on four specific modules....

Mindfulness: Learning to be present in the moment without judgment.

Distress Tolerance: How to get through a crisis without making the situation worse.

Emotion Regulation: Understanding and managing intense feelings.

Interpersonal Effectiveness: Communicating your needs and setting boundaries while maintaining self-respect.

Teens and young adults are in a unique developmental stage where the brain's emotional center is highly active, but the "logical" center is still catching up. DBT provides the "software" to help manage that "hardware."

Reduces "All-or-Nothing" Thinking: It helps young people move away from "I'm a failure" or "Nobody likes me" toward more balanced perspectives.

Improves Relationships: It provides a script for how to ask for help or say "no" to peers.

Builds Resilience: Instead of feeling powerless against emotions, patients learn that feelings are like waves—they peak and then subside.

DBT isn't just about "talking" regarding your problems, it’s about learning active skills that you can use the moment you leave the office.
