We’re celebrating National Handwashing Awareness Week with a refresher on proper handwashing technique! Handwashing is a key tactic in preventing the spread of common illnesses that are known to circulate more easily in the winter, like the flu and norovirus.

Another tip for helping limit viral spread? Avoid touching your face, including your eyes, nose, and mouth, excessively.

And a tip from us healthcare workers if your skin is extra-dry from all the washing: Add a small bottle of moisturizer to your daily essentials so you can soothe your hands on-the-go!

Flu season kicked off in October when annual spread picks up, but it’s not too late to get a flu shot! And what better time than National Influenza Vaccination Week, December 1-5?

While it doesn’t completely eliminate your chance of catching the flu, a flu shot helps prevent serious illness from the disease, which sends hundreds of thousands of people to the hospital yearly, according to CDC estimates. The flu can be especially dangerous to those with increased risk of complications from it, including young children, seniors 65 and older, and people with certain chronic medical conditions. Just in time for Diabetes Awareness Month! If you live with diabetes, check out these tips from our Registered Dietitian Frank Scardigno for help navigating healthful choices during the holiday season!

•Always opt for complex/high fiber carbohydrate sources. Examples: Whole wheat bread, pasta, beans and legumes, brown rice, oatmeal etc.
•Avoid or minimize sugar-sweetened beverages
•Consider carbohydrate counting or consistent carbohydrate meal planning.
•Add a protein choice to a whole grain carbohydrate choice. Example: Hard-boiled egg(s) w/seasoned brown rice, Whole grain bread w/peanut or almond butter, Cottage cheese w/blueberries and whole grain crackers.
•Brisk, 15-30 minute walk after meals can reduce post-meal blood sugar by up to 20%.

Thank you, Frank, for your expertise and commitment to patient care!
