Yesterday, TMH, Capital Area Healthy Start Coalition, Leon County Schools and Simply Healthcare Plans celebrated the second year of Littles to Leaders - a program focused on empowering parents to be their child’s first teacher 👶 .

The partnership provides a “brain bag” to every newborn baby in Leon County filled with resources to aid in early childhood development and increase kindergarten readiness. Ninety percent of a child’s brain development occurs before age five and parents are their child’s first teachers!

To aid parents in teaching their children and getting them ready for kindergarten, the “brain bags” include a book 📖, silicone bib, a list of local resources and more.

TMH is proud to be a part of this great new program that will have a long-term impact on our community!

👏 ❤️ 👏 Congratulations to our Heart & Vascular Team for meeting multiple 5-star quality metrics.🏅

Our Heart & Vascular service line was recently recognized as TMH Quality Champions for performing at a 5-star level in three quality metrics in 2024:

⭐ 3.2% AMI 30-Day Internal Mortality Rate (5-star performance is 10.1%)
⭐ 0% CABG 30-Day Internal Mortality Rate (5-star performance is 1.4%)
⭐ 1.7% Heart Failure 30-Day Internal Mortality Rate (5-star performance is 2.7%)

Achieving 5-star ratings requires multiple strategies focusing on quality care, patient safety and continuous improvement. This includes early identification, treatment and a multidisciplinary approach by an entire care team. Preoperative and procedural preparation and planning along with identifying effective surgical techniques are also key. Post operative and post procedural care, from early mobilization to discharge follow-up planning, including appointments, medication adherence checks and lifestyle modification support are all paramount to the sustained success of our outcomes.

Congratulations to every member of this amazing team for playing a key role in this latest achievement and for providing superior care to our patients.

September is Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month and we’re proud to lead our community’s fight against this terrible disease.

Approximately 100,000 women are diagnosed with a gynecologic cancer each year. This includes cervical, ovarian, uterine, vaginal and vulvar cancers.

Knowing your risk factors, the signs and symptoms (such as abnormal vaginal bleeding or pelvic pain) and following your healthcare provider’s guidelines for screening, which can include Pap testing and HPV testing, help increase your odds of detecting the disease at an earlier stage.

If you need us, our team of three board-certified gynecologic oncologists, Amanda Stephens, DO; Christine Fitzsimmons, DO; and Jay Allard, MD, are ready to provide the collaborative, comprehensive and compassionate cancer care you deserve.

Learn more about the signs of gynecologic cancer and the resources available to you at TMH.ORG/GYNCancer.

Heading to Doak to cheer on Florida State Seminoles Football as they take on Boston College tonight? Be sure to cheer loudly for our Kickoff Kid, Skylar, and her family 🏈!

Each home game this season, we've teamed up with Florida State Seminoles to recognize our bravest pediatric patients at the start of each game.

Skylar was born weighing only 2 lbs., 9 oz., and stayed in the NICU for 44 days, overcoming several battles including being on oxygen. Now entering second grade at Conley Elementary 🏫 in Tallahassee, Skylar is a strong little girl who loves to color – especially anything with her favorite color, light purple 💜. If Skylar could have any superpower, she says she would fly.

Go Skylar and Go Noles! To read more of Skylar's story, visit TMH.ORG/KickoffKid

Today is International Dog Day or as we like to call it International Dogtor Day. 🐶 🏥

Join us in acknowledging and celebrating our numerous volunteer teams that make powerful impacts both clinically and emotionally with patients and staff in over 60 facilities in the Big Bend area. They are pawsome to say the least.

As this is an “international” celebration, we thought it would be fitting to highlight one of our favorite dogtors from across the pond, Leo. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 We could tell you about the amazing work Leo does with patients, but Leo can do a better job and with a British accent. 🇬🇧

Watch Leo’s interview. You won’t be disappointed. 😄

❓ Did you know that around five million Americans suffer from wounds that won't heal? When non-healing wounds are not treated timely and effectively, they can become infected and, in extreme cases, lead to amputation.

🏥 The Tallahassee Memorial Wound Healing Center is the area’s largest clinic devoted solely to advanced wound management and care. Specializing in chronic and non-healing wounds, our multidisciplinary team includes plastic surgeons, internal medicine physicians, geriatric medicine physicians, podiatrists, surgeons and vascular specialists.

📸 Christopher A. Griggs, D.O, a vascular specialist, and Penny, an RN, work at the Wound Healing Center treating patients with complex wounds, in this case a dog bite. As they do with all patients, our wound care team will work closely with this patient to create and implement a customized care plan to ensure he has the best outcome possible.

Therapeutic Touch uses focused intention, compassion and energy to restore balance in the body. Research has shown that Therapeutic Touch is beneficial in relieving symptoms such as pain, nausea and anxiety and can promote relaxation, rest and a sense of well-being. First taught at New York University in 1972, Therapeutic Touch is now practiced in over 200 medical centers, colleges and hospices in the US alone.

Anyone interested in learning more about the theory and practice of Therapeutic Touch can register to attend the Foundations of Therapeutic Touch Thursday, Sept. 12 and Friday, Sept. 13 at 1301 E. 6th Avenue. To register, visit TMH.ORG/TherapeuticTouch

08/19/2024

In addition to his role as TMH’s Chief of Public Safety, Philip Doyle is also a dedicated, high-activity trooper for Troop H of the Florida Highway Patrol.

On Mother’s Day 2023, Philip was traveling to spend a pleasant afternoon with his mother when he noticed a vehicle traveling fast and recklessly, using multiple lanes and the shoulders to pass other traffic. As the vehicle passed Philip, it began to swerve and slide sideways off the roadway into the center median, where the vehicle flipped and rolled over twice before landing upright.

Philip immediately stopped and called *FHP for assistance. As he approached the vehicle, he saw smoke and steam come from the vehicle, indicating a fire risk. Philip began assessing the driver for injuries and worked to free him as he was partially trapped in the vehicle. Through the process, he learned the driver had a suspended driver’s license, and the tag displayed was not assigned to the vehicle. As the driver became less disoriented, he attempted to leave the scene, but Philip convinced the driver to remain until the sheriff’s office arrived.

In response to his honorable actions, Philip was recently recognized as an Auxiliary Trooper of the Year by the Florida Highway Patrol at their 8th Annual Awards Banquet in Palm Beach, Florida.

We are proud of all that Philip does to help keep TMH and our community safe. Congratulations on this esteemed recognition, Philip!

Welcome our newest orthopedic surgery team member, ROSA!

The ROSA Robot System helps our orthopedic surgeons perform knee replacements more precisely and efficiently than traditional surgery, helping restore as much of a patient's natural knee as possible. It also provides real-time data and feedback to help them make informed decisions during surgery.

"ROSA gives us a quantum leap in the precision of our knee replacement surgeries over traditional knee replacement," said Dr. Bradley Walter, Orthopedic Surgeon with TMH and Tallahassee Orthopedic Clinic. "It also allows us to digitally plan our surgery before it even begins, helping to ensure the best possible outcomes for our patients."

ROSA has already been hard at work, helping Dr. Walter perform three knee replacement surgeries at TMH, with plans for many more!
