September is sickle cell awareness month!

Sickle cell disease is a genetic disorder that causes hemoglobin to polymerize upon deoxygenation (delivery of oxygen to tissues) which causes red blood cells to sickle. About 300,000 infants are born with sickle cell disease each year globally and about 100,000 individuals are currently living with sickle cell disease in the United States.
