Kickstart Your Plant-Based Diet: 5 Easy Tips
Plant-based diets are built around nutrient-rich and heart-healthy ingredients, including minimally processed produce, grains, nuts, seeds, herbs, and spices. But although this food list might seem straightforward, making the switch to plant-based eating may prove to be a bit more challenging.
Whether you want to go vegan, vegetarian, or flexitarian, here are our tips for kickstarting your plant-based diet:
1) Ease into it.
Going plant-based doesn’t require an all-or-nothing approach. To test the waters, consider going plant-based for one meal a day and building up from there.
2)Stock up.
Plant-based foods often require more preparation than processed options. To save time, stock up on easy-to-prepare or grab-and-go options, such as baby carrots, fresh fruits, canned beans, and shelf-stable grains.
3)Plan for protein.
Getting enough protein will help you stay full and satisfied, so be sure to incorporate beans, whole grains, green vegetables, and soy-based products into your diet.
4) Eat adventurously.
Variety is key when following a plant-based diet. Experimenting with new types of produce, ingredient combinations, spices, recipes, cuisines, and cooking styles will keep you from getting sick of salads. Never had an artichoke? Avoided tofu? With a little creativity and courage, now might be the time to try them.
5) Look to other food cultures.
Experiment with other cuisines that focus on plant-based foods. These might include Indian, Vietnamese, Ethiopian, Persian, and even Italian food.
