From the days of Del Conte’s Restaurant—where the garlic cheese spread became the stuff of local legend—to three generations of babies born at Torrance Memorial, the Del Conte family’s roots in this community run deep. As we approach the end of the year, we’re grateful for supporters like the Del Contes who help ensure exceptional care for every family who walks through our doors.

Former pediatrics patient Maeve Macritchie, 12, recently held a bake sale at her middle school in Redondo Beach and donated the proceeds to Torrance Memorial Foundation to support the Pediatrics Unit, saying the care she received by the team left a lasting impression on her, so much so that she wants to pursue a career in healthcare. We are so grateful for supporters like Maeve who help us continue to provide expert care for 100 years and beyond!

For more than 100 years, Torrance Memorial has been committed to strengthening the health and well-being of our community. Our newly published FY 2025 Community Benefit Report reflects that promise in action.

This year, we invested more than $165 million in community-focused services—from health education, chronic disease support, and low-cost screenings to pre- and post-natal programs, mental health resources, transportation assistance, and free support groups. We expanded access to care, delivered thousands of hours of professional training for the next generation of healthcare workers, partnered with local schools and nonprofits, and provided essential aid for vulnerable families.

Our mission has never been just about delivering exceptional care within our walls—it’s about lifting up our entire community. As we enter our second century of service, we remain dedicated to ensuring everyone has the opportunity to live a healthier, safer, and more supported life.

Weighted vests are having a moment — but there’s real science behind the trend. According to Alexander Mejia, MD, FACOG, adding light resistance during walking or exercise can help stimulate bone growth, improve posture and balance, and support muscle strength as women age. He recommends starting with just a few pounds, increasing slowly, and talking with a healthcare provider if you have joint, pelvic floor, or postpartum concerns.

When used safely, weighted vests can be a practical tool to support long-term bone health and overall well-being. Read more on our blog: https://www.torrancememorial.org/healthy-living/blog/do-weighted-vests-really-boost-bone-health/

A recent patient shared how Breast Center technologist Nooshin Naghsheh went above and beyond to provide compassionate, thorough care during a stressful time. Without being asked, she completed a full bilateral screening, took time to document every detail, and helped clarify previous findings from an outside facility. Her professionalism and kindness brought the patient immense peace of mind. Thank you, Nooshin, for representing the best of Torrance Memorial.

— Dr. Rhea Mathew, Emergency Medicine

Energy drinks and high-caffeine coffees are on the rise — and our ER is seeing the fallout.
