It's not far-fetched to say that this country is the most divided it has been politically, at least in my lifetime. While politics have always been a hot button issue, the division between party lines is costing us our relationships with friends, family members, co-workers and others. When I start a new episode of treatment with a client, I always assess for self-defeating behaviors that get in the way of progress and self-determination. People have a tendency to blame outside variables, such as bosses, family members, the weather, or anything else other than themselves when times are rough; but sometimes, it helps to have an honest conversation with ourselves to identify what variables we can control in order to minimize self-defeating behavior
