Today we celebrate the 80th birthday of Dottie Wine, a community activist and co-founder of the South Bay LGBTQ Center. In 1989, Dottie served as an integral part in helping to establish the first LGBTQ community center in the South Bay. To this day, Dottie continues to support our local LGBTQ community along with many other local organizations.

Hermosa Beach Pride’s VP Dom stopped by the South Bay LGBTQ Center last week for a roundtable discussion with Assembly member Al Muratsuchi regarding LGBTQ needs. After the discussion, Hermosa Beach Pride donated $1,000 to the South Bay LGBTQ Center to help fund our incredible programs and services. Together, we’re building a stronger, more inclusive South Bay!

📢 Remember Blues! ✊🏾🏳️‍🌈

In 1982, the LGBTQ+ community took a stand against racist and homophobic police raids at Blues, a Black and Latino gay bar in NYC. This protest was a pivotal moment in the fight against gentrification and moral cleansing.

Let’s honor this history and keep fighting for justice!

In celebration of Black History Month, the South Bay LGBTQ Center recognizes Bayard Rustin, who was born on March 17, 1912 in West Chester, Pennsylvania. He was a civil rights and gay rights activist. He was Martin Luther King Jr.’s advisor during the 50s and 60s. Rustin was arrested multiple times for civil disobedience acts and for being openly gay. He brought the AIDS crisis to the attention of the NAACP. He was considered an expert organizer for human rights as he was involved in domestic and international fights for justice. Bayard Rustin died in New York City on August 24, 1987.
