The beauty in summer isn’t just the sunshine: it’s the small rituals that come with it. A porch chat at dusk. Iced tea in a favorite glass. A breeze through the open window.

But for older adults, summer also brings safety risks that can turn those beautiful moments into dangerous ones.

At FirstLight, we help seniors enjoy summer safely, so those small moments stay sweet, not stressful.

Independence looks different for everyone.

For Deborah, it’s sharing a meal at home with help from her caregiver, Cindy, who knows her routines, preferences and what makes her feel seen.

Your aging loved one forgot where she put her keys, called your daughter by her sister’s name and stared aimlessly during lunch. Sounds pretty normal, right? Of course, forgetfulness happens to all of us, but if your loved one has any of these early dementia warning signs, you may want to schedule an appointment with a medical professional: https://www.firstlighthomecare.com/blog/three-early-signs-of-dementia

This Father’s Day, we thought it appropriate to highlight our “Godfather of the West Coast,” Mark Paretchan, owner of FirstLight locations in Marin County and Sonoma County. Mark got his nickname because of his love for mentoring others, and one of his most notable mentees is his son – and VP, Assistant General Manager – Charlie.

Mark, what’s one unexpected thing you’ve learned about Charlie while working together?
“I have learned to be more patient and am excited about the future of our family business because of his efforts. We spend a lot more time together and I am impressed with his abilities in the operational side of our company.”

Thanks, Mark and Charlie, for showing us that fathers and sons can discover new things about each other at any age.

You’re probably aware of what Alzheimer’s Disease is, but how does it change the brain, exactly?

Alzheimer’s slowly damages the connections that help us think and remember. Then, plaque builds up and cells tangle, affecting memory centers first and then spreading to impaired thinking, behavior and bodily functions later.

So, if your loved one is dealing with this disease, this is why you may notice memory loss first, then she changes in everyday behavior over time. Take a closer look at how Alzheimer’s affects the brain here: https://www.alz.org/alzheimers-dementia/what-is-alzheimers/brain-tour-part-2

Serviceman returns comitted to continuance of “Helping his communitty”

After 30 years of serving his community through military service, Larry Roberts is committed to continuing his years of service by assisting our seniors. Prior to and during his deployments, care for his grandparents and parents taught him one thing. It’s hard to find good caregivers that are dependable and honest. He brings all the trust and integrity to homecare that he demonstrated for years as a Combat Medic and Loadmaster in the military. Not wanting to reinvent the wheel and through due diligence he decided to open a franchise office of First Light Home Care, to assist all the South Bay Seniors, providing dependable and honest assistance with activities of daily living. “Once opened we found that Seniors with Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and frailty are not the only ones in the community needing assistance. We also help those with disabilities, recovering from surgeries, new or expectant mothers, amongst others. Many of our clients requested transportation in their wheel chair, so we obtained and wheel chair van to assist them!” Larry is committed to providing the best home care in the South Bay and Long Beach. Call today to see how it should be done!!
