Congratulations to Torrance Firefighters on graduation.

Would like to congratulate Firefighters Rick Cathey and Evan Wogoman on their graduation from paramedic training. Paramedic training consists of an intense 6 month training course involving classroom work, hospital internship and two months of peer review by experienced and specially trained field paramedic preceptors. Rick and Evan have now earned the title of Firefighter/Paramedic and will rejoin their co-workers here at Torrance (Fire Department) in providing some of the highest level of pre-hospital care that can be found anywhere in the nation. We are all very proud of your accomplishment.

Leadership Torrance 2012 celebrates our class project

Responded to a reported residential structure fire at 2043 169th Place. First arriving fire units found a 2 story single family residence with smoke and fire coming from the first floor attic vents and progressing into the attic space over the second story. Firefighters searching the structure found 2 elderly occupants still asleep in their beds unaware of the fire. The husband and wife were evacuated from the home and evaluated and treated by Paramedic/Firefighters at the scene for minor injuries and released. The fire went to a 3rd alarm with other local fire agencies back filling Torrance Fire Stations. It took 37 firefighters approx. 35 minutes to knock down the flames in the multiple attic spaces. The roof was weakened to the point that firefighters used their aerial ladder as a work platform. One firefighter was reported to have sustained a back injury resulting from fire operations. The hot, humid weather made it necessary for crews to be hydrated and rotated often for safety. The displaced couple was taken in by neighbors temporarily until other housing arrangements could be made.
