🌿 Tick Alert! 🌿 As you enjoy the great outdoors, those stealthy ticks are on the hunt for a meal. 🔍 Here’s how to avoid and remove these unwelcome hitchhikers:

Preventive Measures:
Wear shoes, long pants tucked into socks, a long-sleeved shirt, hat, and gloves.
Stick to trails and avoid low bushes and tall grass.
Keep dogs leashed to prevent tick encounters.
Use insect repellents with at least 20% DEET.

Tick Removal:
Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick near its head.
Pull the tick’s body away from your skin gently.
Avoid twisting or jerking.
Seal the tick in a jar if possible.

Remember, not every tick carries disease, but vigilance is key! If you’re concerned about a tick bite, consult a healthcare professional within 72 hours of removal

Whether you have a small herb pot or rows of peas, carrots, potatoes, and sweet corn, it will soon be time to start harvesting and savoring your homegrown produce. Here are some delicious ideas:

No Prep Needed:
Snack on veggies like tomatoes or radishes.
Create a summery salad by tossing greens (lettuce, kale, spinach) with sliced tomatoes, radishes, green onions, and cucumbers. Add cooked chicken or a sliced hard-boiled egg for a full meal.
Cut fresh herbs as needed for seasoning meats, vegetables, salads, and beverages.

Roasting:
Roast firm vegetables like beets, carrots, squash, and bell peppers. Toss them with oil, balsamic vinegar, and seasonings. Try different flavor combinations!

Grilling:
Make veggie packets with carrots, potatoes, onions, bell peppers, mushrooms, corn, or summer squash. Seal them in foil with salt, pepper, butter, or oil, and grill alongside meat or fish.
Alternatively, use a grill basket or individual skewers for smaller veggies like red potatoes, onions, and zucchini.

Air Frying:
If you have an air fryer, cut veggies into chunks and season with oil, salt, pepper, and herbs. Cook until tender for a crispy treat.

Spiralizing:
Use a spiralizer to turn vegetables into fun shapes for salads, stir-fries, or pasta alternatives.

Remember to pick your homegrown produce at its peak freshness during cooler times of the day. Happy harvesting! 🌱🥕🍅

With avian influenza making headlines, staying informed is crucial. Here's some information about how it might affect your everyday life.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) actively monitors the H5N1 avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu. Despite the ongoing outbreak, the public health risk remains low. Since 2020, there has been a significant outbreak of avian influenza among wild birds, poultry, and backyard bird flocks. The virus has even been detected in certain mammalian species, including dairy cattle, raising concerns about potential transmission to humans.

The good news is that pasteurization processes used in the United States and many other countries inactivate avian influenza. Consuming pasteurized milk and properly cooked animal products (such as eggs, beef, or chicken) is safe. Following CDC guidelines for safe food preparation is essential, including using a food thermometer and practicing good hygiene.

While the risk to humans remains low, precautions are recommended for those interacting with birds. If you handle sick or deceased birds (whether in backyard flocks or poultry farms), consider wearing an N95 mask, eye protection, and gloves. Stay informed and take precautions to protect yourself and others during this outbreak.

Congratulations to Trisha O., a registered nurse in the Progressive Care Unit at Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato, who recently received The DAISY Award.

Read an excerpt from the nomination:
"I was lucky enough to have Trisha as my nurse while I was hospitalized for symptoms of my end-stage heart failure. Every day is a hard day, but this day was especially hard on me. Trisha assured me she was going to work her hardest to make sure she got to the bottom of what was going on with me. Her compassion and empathy were indescribable. Her bedside manner is like no other. There is no better or more deserving nurse to receive The DAISY Award than Trisha. Our healthcare system needs more nurses like Trisha."

Congratulations to Janet H., Mayo Clinic Health System in Bloomer, Wisconsin, who recently received The DAISY Award.

Read an excerpt from the nomination:
"Recently, an ambulance brought in a patient with severe anxiety and depression who was also very sick. Janet was by this patient’s bedside the entire time. She was able to place an IV, (even though it was almost impossible to find a vein) while calming the patient. Janet was an advocate for the patient to manage their pain and worked hard to position and medicate this patient so they were comfortable. Janet has been an incredible nurse for the past 27 years."

Measles was declared eliminated from the U.S., but cases are returning. While many viruses are not contagious or moderately contagious, measles is aerosolized and highly infectious. It spreads when an infected person coughs, sneezes or talks, producing infected droplets. The most effective way to prevent measles is by vaccination. The vaccine is primarily administered as the combination measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) or measles-mumps-rubella-varicella (MMRV) vaccine. Talk with your primary care clinician about measles or vaccinations. Read why vaccination is the best defense against the spread of the virus. https://www.mayoclinichealthsystem.org/hometown-health/speaking-of-health/common-questions-about-measles

☀️ While you're out there soaking up the sun, don't forget that the heat can be a beast. Whether you're working or playing, staying cool is key! Remember to take those crucial precautions to avoid heat-related mishaps.

05/23/2024

UV rays from the sun can cause skin damage in as little as 15 minutes. The key is to be sun savvy and know how to keep your skin healthy.
🌞 Avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If you must be outside during these hours, seek shade using an umbrella, a tree or other shelter.
👒 Don the proper headgear. A wide-brimmed hat can protect your face, ears and neck.
✅ Perform regular skin checks. Look for any changes to moles, freckles or birthmarks. Also, monitor any new skin changes that have occurred.
👚 Protect children's skin. Children younger than 6 months should not use sunscreen but should be protected from the sun's rays with protective clothing and shade. Apply sunscreen regularly to children 6 months and older when outdoors.
🧴 Use sunscreen when outdoors. A higher sun protection factor (SPF) number in sunscreen indicates increased protection. Use sunscreen even on cloudy or cool days because damage from the sun's rays can still occur. Reapply every two hours.
😎 Wear sunglasses with UVA and UVB protection. Proper, protective sunglasses help prevent damage to the sensitive skin around your eyes and block ultraviolet light from the sun that may cause cataracts.

Our staff’s care extends to all creatures, great and small—ducklings included! Returning from a lunch break, staff at our Lake City, Minnesota hospital heard ducklings and noticed a mother duck by a storm drain. They realized six ducklings had fallen and were stuck in the storm drain. They quickly worked together to help rescue them. While the mother duck hid during the rescue, the team brought the ducklings to the side lawn and reunited them. A big thank you to our fantastic staff for their quick and caring actions!

Congratulations to Kathy R., Mayo Clinic Health System in La Crosse, who recently received The DAISY Award.

Read an excerpt from the nomination:
"My spouse was taken by ambulance to the emergency room in La Crosse for a suspected stroke. They were transported from the Onalaska clinic to the Emergency Department. The Emergency Department was busy that day, yet everyone made us feel like we were their only patient. Kathy was their nurse, and during our conversations, I mentioned I was a retired nurse. Kathy believed it was very important for me to be in the room when my spouse was seen by the neurologist. At the time, we were in the cafeteria getting a bite to eat as my spouse had been taken for a 2 p.m. MRI and returned before we finished in the cafeteria. Kathy took it upon herself to come to the cafeteria and get me; she said I needed to be able to talk to the neurologist. Plus, she brought a wheelchair because I walk slow due to a previous injury and surgical repair. She whisked me back to the room; thus, I was able to talk with the neurologist. Kathy went above and beyond for me and my spouse. Her obvious empathy and caring for us was evident in each interaction we had with her during her shift.
Thankfully, my spouse did not have a stroke or TIA. Truthfully, everyone on duty that day both in the Onalaska clinic and the Emergency Department deserves recognition."

Clinical Nutrition staff from Mayo Clinic Health System in Southeast and Southwest Minnesota came together to assemble birthday kits for a local food shelf. The kits included cake mix, soda (to make the cake rise), frosting, sprinkles, birthday candles and festive plates and napkins. The activity was not only fun but also heartwarming as it allowed the team to spread joy to those who may be facing challenges and lack the resources to celebrate birthdays.

Congratulations to Alex S., a licensed practical nurse in Orthopedics at Mayo Clinic Health System in Red Wing, who recently received The DAISY Award.

Read an excerpt from the nomination:
"My teenage daughter had her first post-op appointment after her knee surgery to get her stitches out. She has never had stitches removed before, so this was a new experience for her. Before Alex even started removing the stitches, she went over each detailed step with my daughter to make sure she was comfortable with the process. She even purposely changed the topic of conversation to help distract my daughter. Even though my daughter is a teenager, she needed a little extra handholding and Alex provided that without a second thought."

We are thrilled to announce the birth of the first baby in the new Family Birth Center at Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato. Proud parents Kendra and Zack and big brother Bentley welcomed Piper on May 7.

What makes Piper’s birth even more special for the Eagle Lake, Minnesota, family is that Madison Green, the same certified nurse midwife who delivered Bentley, was on call and able to deliver Piper. This was the first set of siblings that Green had delivered, making the moment extra special for her.

Kendra said she was impressed by the new unit's amenities, while Zach raved about the dad-friendly accommodations, comfortable sleeping couch and “amazing” large TV in the room.

The family said they had a fantastic experience welcoming baby Piper into the world and were grateful to be the first family to experience the comforts of the new Family Birth Center. Welcome, Piper, and congratulations to the family.
