Hi Oklahoma! 👋

📚 With school being back in session, here are a few questions to ask your child regardless if they are in pre-k or a senior!

❓Are you allowed and encouraged to use the bathroom at school?

❓Is there a reward system in place for NOT asking to go to the bathroom? (Trust us, you may be SURPRISED by the answer you get!!)

❓Are you comfortable using the bathroom at school or do you hold it until you get home?

❓Are you allowed to keep a water bottle with you and are you drinking water throughout the day?

💩 We have noticed for many children, bowel and bladder problems begin when they start pre-k or kindergarten and then continually worsen over the years. These are normally kids who potty train well but then begin having accidents sometime after they start school.

💩 Kids tend to be like us, they don’t like using unfamiliar toilets or using the bathroom when other people can hear them. Kids often tell us the lock on the stall doors don’t work and they are scared someone will walk in on them so they will hold it until they get home.

💩 Midde and High School students often report to us they don’t have TIME to use the bathroom at school! They are often expected to use the bathroom in between classes and by the time they go to their locker and depending on where the bathroom is located, they just don’t have time so they are holding it too.

💩 Holding your bowel and bladder instead of emptying it is often what causes bowel and bladder issues and is why so many kids get referred to us in the first place!

🙌🏻 So, do your child a favor and ask them these questions. Call their school and see what their bathroom policy is and then verify with your child that their experience lines up with the policy. As always, if you have questions or need resources then we are here to help!

We have successfully treated several children with bedwetting issues from ages 5 to 18. We love to see their self esteem improve and happiness grow as they are able to fully enjoy more activities with their peers and family!

Many parents do not seek treatment for bedwetting until the child begins to experience issues with sleepovers, which then impacts the child's quality of life. Most parents are not aware there IS treatment available and it should begin at age 5 to avoid issues with self-esteem and persistent problems into adulthood.
Children experiencing any behaviour problems or difficult temperament are at even greater risk for developing persistent and frequent bedwetting. Once children become aware that bedwetting is unusual for their age or there are negative reactions from parents or peers emotional symptoms could develop.
The take home message here is if your child is bedwetting at age 5 do not delay active treatment! See a pediatric pelvic floor therapist for help!

Female athletes who participate in high impact sports such as gymnastics, dance, cheer, and volleyball are at risk for having episodes of stress incontinence. As intra-abdominal pressure increases due to strenuous activity it can cause the pelvic floor muscles to fail causing urine leakage.

Nocturnal enuresis (bedwetting) is MUCH more common than you think and many children do not simply grow out of it. Many of these kids avoid sleepovers with friends, have never been to an overnight camp, and avoid participating in other peer related social activities. Pediatric Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy can help!

The current study demonstrated that age, male gender, parents' history of enuresis, and siblings' history of enuresis were significant predictive factors for nocturnal enuresis. 59.2% of children with nocturnal enuresis had a positive family history of enuresis.
