“It was unreal. It almost brings you to tears.”

When Hurricane Helene impacted the southeastern U.S., Emily, a dedicated nurse at Atrium Health Levine Children's Beverly Knight Olson Children’s Hospital partnered with her colleague Cathy to launch a powerful donation drive.

Their initiative quickly gained momentum, expanding to Atrium Health Navicent The Medical Center and inspiring teammates to rally behind families in need. Thanks to their leadership and compassion, countless vital supplies, including medicine, teething toys, food, diapers and distilled water poured in, alongside generous financial contributions to purchase additional items.

Their unwavering commitment proved how strong communities can be when we unite for a cause!

What a journey it’s been for this brave little fighter! Beckham has shown the world what true strength looks like from the very beginning.

At 30 weeks, his mom, Cecilia was admitted to Atrium Health Navicent The Medical Center with complications from her pregnancy and a life-threatening condition for the baby. Beckham was born at 1 lb. 8 oz. and was immediately transferred to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) where he was placed on a ventilator. A few weeks after birth, he underwent several tests including an MRI and lumbar puncture, which diagnosed Beckham with an infection in his bloodstream caused from an abscess in his brain, requiring surgery. Through it all, Beckham proved that he was stronger than his circumstances.

Beckham finally went home after 131 days in the hospital, and was greeted by a parade through the NICU. His proud big brother, Everette, was waiting with open arms at home. Today, Beckham is almost 3 years old, recently graduated from one of his specialty clinics, and continues therapy at Atrium Health Navicent. He loves dinosaurs, playing cars with Everette and making everyone around him smile.

This week, Beckham will take his biggest victory lap yet, crossing home plate as the special guest at the Macon Bacon Home Run For Life game! Many of his former NICU caregivers will be there to cheer him on, celebrating the incredible journey of this strong, joyful little boy.

We’re so proud of you, Beckham! ⚾🦕💙

“Just because a child is in the hospital, we don’t want them to ever stop being a kid.”

As a child life specialist at Atrium Health Levine Children’s Beverly Knight Olson Children’s Hospital, that is Heather’s goal with each interaction she shares with families and patients.

Heather always had a passion for working with kids, but it wasn’t until she volunteered at the hospital that she developed an interest in becoming a child life specialist. While completing the child life specialist program at the University of Georgia, she continued to volunteer at the hospital, where she grew more interested in caring for young patients. Over the course of her 10 years with the team, Heather has played a critical role in providing comfort to patients and their families throughout their time at Beverly Knight Olson Children’s Hospital. “It’s a privilege to be able to make their experience a little more positive,” Heather shares, reflecting on some of the highlights of her role in caring for patients.

Heather’s pride in the impact her and her team makes in the lives of patients and their families speaks to their endless dedication to ensuring that no patient feels alone as they navigate their health care.

Thank you, Heather, for your commitment to creating a more positive experience for families, patients and teammates.

Cheers to three of our own! A trio of therapists from our Pediatric Developmental & Behavioral Health department took part in a community training at the Museum of Arts and Sciences. They shared invaluable knowledge on autism and developmental disabilities while sharing their experience on proactive methods to cater to individuals within this population.

What an incredible journey! Ben made his entrance into the world more than three months early in January 2024, weighing less than 3 pounds. Despite his tiny size, he displayed remarkable strength during his 62-day stay in the NICU at Atrium Health Levine Children's Beverly Knight Olson Children’s Hospital. His courage quickly earned him the nickname “Brave Ben,” and the NICU team became like a second family, offering unwavering support and encouragement to him and his loved ones.

Now, 16 months later, Ben is thriving at a healthy 27 pounds. Ben and his family were our recent guests of honor for the Macon Bacon Home Run For Life. Here’s to you, Brave Ben - your strength and spirit continue to inspire!
