❄️ ❗️Winter Helipad Ops❗️ ❄️
With the upcoming risk of wintery precipitation, one of the questions you may find yourself asking is “how do I clear and de-ice my helipad”? Helipad maintenance and safety is critical during winter operations! Some helipads have built in heating mechanisms that keep the pads clear of snow and ice, however this is less common in the Lowcountry due to our typically warm climates. Here are some tips for maintaining a helipad suitable for operations during winter weather conditions!

❄️🚁 Key tips:
• Use airside urea, sodium formate, or sodium acetate for de-icing (avoid corrosive chemicals like rock salt).
• Keep snow piles low (under 20”) or far (at least 20 feet) away to protect helicopters from a tail rotor strike.
• Avoid sand—it’s ineffective and hazardous under rotor wash.
• Clear snow promptly and ensure signage, lighting, and egress areas remain unobstructed/visible.
• Notify Flight Comm if snow or ice is covering your helipad so we can plan accordingly

It’s a sad time at the CARE Flight base as we mourn the loss of our living mascot (science experiment) Pet Unwin.

Pet Unwin unfortunately lost his life a couple nights ago when he was knocked off his perch. He suffered a skull fracture which in turn led to his death stink overtaking the base despite the best efforts of the crew to save him.

As the investigation continues into his death, suspects are being questioned as to the incidents leading up to his tragic tile fated plunge. It’s said that a comment was made about his questionable existence 30 minutes before his unfortunate meeting with his maker.

Said suspect also doesn’t like cats.
