What is Manual Lymph Drainage and who needs it?
MLD is a very gentle, hands-on therapy which improves the flow of lymph and interstitial fluid throughout the body. The techniques are adapted to follow the anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system.
MLD is recommended before and after surgery to reduce swelling and enhance the natural healing process. This specialized treatment is frequently prescribed by plastic surgeons during the recovery phase after liposuction to reduce swelling and fibrosis. In lymphedema therapy, MLD is used to re-route the flow of lymph around blocked areas. The light, rhythmic action of MLD therapy has a soothing effect on the nervous system, promoting a parasympathetic response and analgesic benefits.
MLD can be helpful for patients who are dealing with:
Post-traumatic edema (sprains, whiplash, hematoma)
Post-surgical edema
Lymphedema (chronic swelling caused by damage to the lymphatic system)
Lipedema (a common connective tissue disorder that affects 11% of women)
Lyme disease
Auto-immune disorders (fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma)
Neurological conditions (complex regional pain syndrome)
Migraines
Tinnitus
Fibrocystic breast disease
Pregnancy edema
Diabetes
Inflammation
Who should not receive manual lymph drainage therapy?
MLD is not recommended if you have a fever, untreated congestive heart failure, acute cellulitis (skin infection), or untreated deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
