What is Manual Lymph Drainage and who needs it?

MLD is a very gentle, hands-on therapy which improves the flow of lymph and interstitial fluid throughout the body. The techniques are adapted to follow the anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system.

MLD is recommended before and after surgery to reduce swelling and enhance the natural healing process. This specialized treatment is frequently prescribed by plastic surgeons during the recovery phase after liposuction to reduce swelling and fibrosis. In lymphedema therapy, MLD is used to re-route the flow of lymph around blocked areas. The light, rhythmic action of MLD therapy has a soothing effect on the nervous system, promoting a parasympathetic response and analgesic benefits.

MLD can be helpful for patients who are dealing with:
Post-traumatic edema (sprains, whiplash, hematoma)
Post-surgical edema
Lymphedema (chronic swelling caused by damage to the lymphatic system)
Lipedema (a common connective tissue disorder that affects 11% of women)
Lyme disease
Auto-immune disorders (fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma)
Neurological conditions (complex regional pain syndrome)
Migraines
Tinnitus
Fibrocystic breast disease
Pregnancy edema
Diabetes
Inflammation

Who should not receive manual lymph drainage therapy?
MLD is not recommended if you have a fever, untreated congestive heart failure, acute cellulitis (skin infection), or untreated deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

Callie Christopherson, LMT is a certified manual lymph drainage therapist who is dedicated to the well-being of her clients. Call today if you would like to discuss whether MLD is the right therapy for you.

"Patients with fibromyalgia have some distinctive muscular abnormalities, not in the muscles themselves, but in the connective tissue that encases them, the fascia. Biopsies show an unusually high number of immune cells, and excess collagen. There is growing data that pain from the fascia generates fibromyalgia muscle pain, and this has been my personal, clinical, and research experience.

Two European studies found that after twenty sessions of Myofascial Release therapy, which focuses on gently stretching the fascia that surrounds every muscle, fibromyalgia subjects reported significant pain reduction. What is really great, though, is that they also showed long-lasting pain relief, with reduced levels after one month and six months after their last session.

MFR is by far the most effective treatment I have found to unstick the fascia and reduce fibromyalgia pain. The therapy reduces the fight-or-flight nervous system influences and studies have shown that gentle stretching of the fascia activates a relaxation response.

Unfortunately, 'myofascial release' has become widely and inappropriately used as a generic term for deep tissue massage, and many practitioners confuse the two. Some athletic trainers also teach foam roller techniques that they call myofascial release. Deep tissue massage and foam rolling is not helpful in fibromyalgia. When I refer to myofascial release I mean the gentle prolonged stretching of the fascia of the John F. Barnes' Myofascial Release approach."

Did you know that Myofascial Release (MFR) therapy can benefit horses too?

A horse’s structural alignment can be altered by fascial restrictions. This can lead to difficulties maintaining a gait, a loss of power, or lack of flexibility. Fascial restrictions also commonly create lameness, pain, behavioral changes and fatigue. MFR can help prevent and treat all these issues, while regular treatments can help your horse stay healthier and recover from injury faster.

Mirrored dysfunction

Often, a horse and rider influence each other through the imbalances in their bodies. If your seat bones are uneven in the saddle, you’re causing your pelvis and spine to tilt. The difference in pressure will ask your horse to bend and lift his back asymmetrically, creating torsion in his body. Over time, his fascia will restrict and lead to training difficulties.

As a rider, you should consider booking your own myofascial release session. Doing so will benefit both you and your horse!

Dear clients,
It was a sad day, in mid-March, when I packed up my massage table and office plants, turned off the lights and closed the doors to my business due to Covid-19.

At the time I thought I would be back to work in a couple of weeks. A month, max! But now it’s mid-April and I’m still sheltering at home.

This is a glimpse of my home set up where I work on my own family. I know, poor them! If you’re thinking that you wish you were quarantined with your own personal in-house massage therapist, that makes two of us! Haha.

People have been reaching out, asking when they can reschedule their canceled appointments. I know many of you are hurting from missing your recurring sessions, and feeling a lot of stress on top of the usual aches and pains. The answer is...I don’t know. Soon, I hope!

Massage therapists vow to “do no harm.” So the benefits of massage have to outweigh the risks before I can start up again. I will get in touch with each of my clients about rescheduling, the moment I have a start date.

In the meantime, I’m keeping my skills fresh. This has been a great opportunity to do online classes. I’m particularly excited about a 4-week somatic experiencing and trauma recovery course taught by Dr. Peter Levine that starts tomorrow. This training will make me a more trauma-informed therapist, which I have always strived to be.

As for you, I hope you’re staying well and taking excellent care of yourself. If you need self-care, stretching, and stress-management ideas, please let me know.

FYI, the liquid mineral supplements I sell at the office are still for sale and can be delivered to your house if you live in Washington County. They are $40 per bottle, or $75 for two bottles. Payable by cash or Venmo.

If you don’t have a mask and would like one, I will happily sew a mask with a filter for you. No charge! I will even deliver it to your doorstep so you don’t need to go out.

Remember that trauma lives in your body and manifests as physical symptoms, so it is imperative during stressful times that you be gentle with yourself and keep moving. Your body will thank you!

I miss you all and look forward to seeing you again.

Your devoted massage and myofascial release therapist,

Callie

Dear clients,

As your massage therapist, your health is my top priority. Every business decision I make is with your wellness in mind. That’s why I’ve decided to close my practice for two weeks, to help slow the spread of Covid-19 so that our local healthcare resources don’t become overwhelmed.

Given that this new virus disproportionately affects people over 60, and considering that this age group makes up a large portion of my clientele, this seems like the most caring thing to do. I want to make sure I’m doing everything I can to help you stay healthy.

During the break, I plan to spend some time each day offering distance energy work sessions to any clients who are interested. I’m trained in several energy work methods, including Reiki, Therapeutic Touch, and Quantum Touch. If you would like a FREE energy session, send me a message.

Please reach out if you need suggestions for self-myofascial release techniques you can do at home. If you need anything at all, you have my number.

If your appointment is cancelled, remember that you can reschedule online at CanyonlandHealing.com or text me if you need help rescheduling. I’ll keep you informed of any further developments with this hiatus.

I look forward to being back in the treatment room with you soon.

Stay well,
Callie

At Canyonland Healing Arts we are being proactive and taking steps to keep from spreading the Coronavirus. We want to help everyone stay healthy. As always, we schedule enough time between clients to properly sanitize. As usual, we ask that you cancel your appointment if you aren’t feeling well. During this outbreak, we are waiving late cancellation fees. You will not be charged if you feel sick the day of your appointment. We encourage everyone to continue doing regular self-care practices. We’ll continue to take our responsibility as complementary healthcare providers seriously by following guidelines from the CDC and Southwest Utah Public Health Department to minimize the impact of this new virus in our community.
