May is Asthma Awareness Month. According to the World Health Organization, 300 million people suffer from asthma. It is a chronic disease of the airways that lead to and from the lungs. During an asthma attack, the lining of the bronchial tubes swells, causing airways to become narrow and reducing the flow of air in and out of the lungs. These attacks can cause sleeplessness, fatigue, and reduced activity. If someone is having an asthma attack, the best way to help is to remain calm, sit the person up, get their inhaler, and remove possible triggers.

Stress Awareness Month is observed in April. Have you ever been in a situation that was a little (or a lot) overwhelming, you had deadlines approaching, a mile-long to-do list, and you were in way over your head?! Well, you're definitely not alone. Everyone feels stressed from time to time, especially as we get older and the responsibilities pile onto our plates. While a little bit of it isn't a bad thing, too much stress can be detrimental to our emotional and physical health. Learning to find a healthy balance is the best way to live a productive, happy life.

April is National Parkinson's Awareness Month. As you've seen on this page and our Rock Steady Boxing Westminster Village West Lafayette page, we've been busy fighting back again Parkinson's and raising awareness. Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder. Over time, this slowly progressing condition causes tremors, gait and balance issues, limb stiffness or rigidity, and slow muscle movement. While each person responds differently to the disease, complications often become serious. According to the Parkinson's Foundation, approximately 60,000 Americans are diagnosed with the disease each year. The Red Tulip is used as a symbol for Parkinson's Awareness.

A BIG thank you to our sponsors, volunteers, race participants, Bruno's Pizzeria On Wheels, and Thieme & Wagner Brewery for your help in making this event a success. We can't wait for next year's race, which will take place on Saturday, April 10th! 💜👟

Coming up on Friday this week is National Erase Self-Negativity Day. Often times, it's easy to get down in the dumps on ourselves by being harder on ourselves than we are on our peers or comparing other people's lives to our own. Use today as a reset; get yourself in the gym to clear your mind and begin casting out your negative thoughts and replace them with positive ones!

The first Wednesday in April is National Walking Day. It seems fitting that it's also April Fool's Day today and it's raining outside! Don't let this discourage you - we have treadmills and Nu-Steps here at the Live Well Center to get your heart pumping! National Epilepsy Awareness Day is tomorrow and aims to increase the knowledge of a neurological condition affecting over 50 million people. Epilepsy affects our central nervous system, which causes seizures and other symptoms. Epilepsy can be caused by brain injury, genetics, immune disorders, infections, and metabolic disorders, though in some patients, there is no known cause. There is no cure for epilepsy, but it is highly treatable. Wear purple tomorrow in honor of someone you know who is affected by epilepsy!
