October is National Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Month. Sudden cardiac arrest is often compared to a heart attack, but the two are very different. A heart attack is when blood flow to the heart is blocked. Sudden cardiac arrest is when the heart malfunctions and stops beating unexpectedly. In 95% of sudden cardiac cases, the victim is lost. Every year, more than 350,000 people die as a result of cardiac arrest. In fact, sudden cardiac arrest (or SCA) kills one person every two minutes. When somebody has cardiac arrest, call 911, perform CPR if you are trained, and use a defibrillator.

World Mental Health Day on October 10 raises annual awareness and mobilizes efforts to support mental health. As a whole, we often misunderstand mental health because it is hard to define. Mental health affects thoughts, feelings, and actions. When we have positive mental health, we handle stress better, our productivity remains stable, and we realize our full potential. In the United States, just over 18% of the population has a form of anxiety disorder. If you know someone who struggles with a mental health disorder, World Mental Health Day is a great way to reach out to them. While many people don't feel comfortable talking to others about their diagnosis, knowing they have someone to reach out to makes a real difference.

Over the past six months, the Live Well Center has hosted outings to hike local trails and parks on a monthly basis. For October, which is sadly our last outing until the weather gets warmer, we ventured to Prophetstown State Park to see the Trail of Scarecrows! Westminster Village Magnolia Court residents made a scarecrow, and we were so proud to see it in-person!

Class Spotlight: Employee Exercise Class πŸ‹πŸ’ͺ

This employee class meets on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 6:30am to "burn some butter", as the participants like to say! The class is led by our personal trainer, Brenden, who focuses on different strength, balance, core, and conditioning exercises. It takes a lot of discipline to workout before the workday, so shoutout to these employees for prioritizing their health!

Every year, World Heart Day on September 29 strives to increase awareness of cardiovascular disease, including how to prevent it. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the world. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), nearly 18 million people die each year from heart-related issues. About 85% of these deaths are due to heart attack and stroke. As we approach this day, it's important to know if you are at risk. Some modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular disease include to***co use, unhealthy diet, obesity, physical inactivity, hypertension, and harmful use of alcohol.
