The featured posture this week is Standing Bow-Pulling Pose, Dandayamana Dhanurasana in Sanskrit.
Benefits: This posture strengthens, lengthens, increases balance and equalizes blood circulation across the right and left sides of the body. Increases hip joint flexibility, strengthens legs, butt, back, shoulders and abdominal muscles. It also improves breathing as it opens the chest cavity and increases circulation to lungs and heart.
How to do it: this posture takes time to master. The goal is to eventually hold inside ankle with all five fingers. Extend opposite arm up to the ceiling, then bend forward and continuously kick.
Tips: After grabbing your ankle in setup, push your knees together to maintain balance. When you kick back with your raised leg, lean forward with your body. Take it slow, and don’t force a split between legs. Use a steady gaze in mirror to keep your balance. Fingers engaged and reaching forward. Standing leg is locked!
Make sure your standing foot points forward in line with your body, with your weight distributed evening between all four corners of foot.
Good luck! See you in the hot room soon!
