My favorite number is number 5.

Five years ago, I planted a seed. A quiet vision rooted in the belief that the relationship between two human beings is most powerful therapeutic tool we have; to truly see, validate, and hold with understanding.

What began as a single room and a deep desire to honor the emotional lives of others has grown into something more layered, more connected, more alive. Over the years, I’ve witnessed the fear and courage of those confronting their pain, triumphs of the human spirit, and the sacredness of simply showing up. Imperfect and uncertain; the beautiful dance of acceptance and change.

I’ve seen the power of growth, vulnerability and excitement of my colleagues perfecting their craft and embracing their capacity to be an agent of change in this world.

This all hasn’t been without a few L’s and hard lessons along the way. And yet, I trust that sometimes the victory is in the s**t that DIDN’T happen.

I’ve grown alongside those who’ve entrusted me as clients, tried to learned from every session, and been humbled by the deeply human process. Hopefully with some success.

Today, I pause in gratitude for what’s come of the past five years, and motivation for writing the next chapters. The coming years will (hopefully!) bring expansion, innovative programs, new services and more collaboration; continued movement toward the mission. Dreaming forward. I hope we are doing right by what our communities need from us. The seed is blooming.

Thank you for being part of this story. I couldn’t be more grateful. Here’s to year five! 🙏🏽💚

Sometimes the most meaningful growth comes from being in the room with others who get it; the responsibility, the burnout, the breakthroughs, the why.

I’m grateful that Alere Emotional Health LLC has been welcomed as a new member of the Family Advocacy Outreach Network (FAON), expanding our consulting work with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children

I’m also incredibly excited and humbled to have been invited to speak at this year’s FAON national conference in June, presenting on “The Cost of Caring”, working to support practitioners doing their best to better understand how to manage the weight of the work.

If you’re a clinician seeking connection, greater purpose, and a reminder that you do make a difference, I invite you to apply to join the network that helps serve some of our most vulnerable populations. There is power in community. There is energy in shared mission.

Perfectionism often stems from a deep-seated need for approval and a fear of rejection. Too often  these feelings can originate from early life experiences where we felt we had to EARN love and acceptance. Feeling like a burden is tied to this, the guilt of people in our lives not being happy with us, as we may believe our worth is conditional.

This develops as protection, but protection from what? Being vulnerable.

Allowing others to SEE us, really see us.  We let others witness our good, and hide our mess.  And yet, it’s in that mess that we truly learn about ourselves and let our exiled self learn to live. If I can trust you to share my light, I can learn to let you into my darkness. That is safety and unguarded can be scary.

Embrace self-compassion and recognize that your value is inherent. You don’t need to be perfect to be worthy of love and connection. Healing begins when we accept ourselves, flaws and all.

The grass is greener over there, huh?

Have you ever considering pausing and asking why that is?  Because that person over there is watering their own grass and ain’t giving a damn about yours!

Comparison, like a poison, corrodes and gnaws at the fabric of our mental health.  We impulsive views “other” as better, diminishing and obscuring our own brilliance and possibility. If you’re going to compare, look at tactics, patterns, discipline, vulnerabilities, processes, etc and see how you can apply them to the landscape of your life and existence.

Pour into your own relationships, to self and others. Pour into your health, your mind, your spirit, and if you’re not sure how, allow for the vulnerability to ask for help.

Nourish the ground beneath your feet. True wellness comes through the conscious act of investing in the self and your own potential.  Let your grass grow as it will for you, at its own pace and direction.

In that revered space between therapist and client, curiosity is the key to genuine connection. A therapist must delve deep into the emotional and belief terrains of their client, seeking to understand the unspoken truths, unconscious hopes and hidden pains. By being genuinely curious about a client’s emotions and beliefs, a therapist opens the door to healing and self-discovery.

At times, we as clinicians allow our desire to alleviate suffering (at best) or our ego (at worst) to impulsive move toward problem solving or explaining our insight without truly allowing their understanding to develop. And, when we get honest with ourselves, it’s often rooted in avoiding our own discomforts with those same emotions.

Let curiosity guide the path. Anchor. Deepen. Broaden.

Boundaries are the silent guardians of our inner peace.

They are not walls to keep the world out, but gentle reminders of where our own gardens need nurturing.

Reflecting on the journey of understanding, we try to be mindful that setting boundaries is an act of self-respect and self-care. Acts recognizing our own worth and giving ourselves the permission to feel secure within ourselves, without the weight of external expectations. We can embrace setting boundaries, with others AND with ourselves, not as barriers, but as bridges towards our own well-being and authentic self-expression

In the quiet of our solitude, we are confronted with the stark truths of our existence, even when they are dark and conflicted. It is within these moments, alone, that the noise of the world fades and the clarity of our own minds becomes paramount.

In this sacred space, we are not evading life but rather, engaging with it more deeply. Mental health isn’t just about society’s conversation with us; it’s also about the conversation we have with ourselves. Solitude offers a mirror, reflecting back not who we are told to be, but who we truly are.

Let us treasure these moments of aloneness, for they are the crucible in which our strength is forged and our authenticity is revealed.

Goals for the new year. 🙏🏽

As we gather to celebrate Thanksgiving, let's focus best we can to embrace the spirit of gratitude and connection. While the history of this day comes with great conflict to many of us, it also reminds us that in the midst of life's complexities and challenges, there is always room for thankfulness and togetherness.

May we find peace in our shared experiences and strength in our collective being. It’s okay if everything isn't perfect. It's a day to be thankful for the small things – a shared laugh, a warm meal, a kind word. It's about appreciating each other and the moments we have, no matter how simple they may be.

Enjoy your day, eat some good food, and take a moment to just be. Wishing you a day full of warmth and good company.
