There is a first time for everything… and recently, I heard something in an IEP meeting that truly stopped me in my tracks

A school administrator said:

“We write goals based on who we want the student to be at the end of the year.”

IEP goals are not about shaping children into who adults prefer them to be

They should be based on present levels, current data, disability-related needs, and meaningful progress

Our children deserve goals that support access, build skills, and honor who they already are

So when something does not sit right in that meeting, speak up and name it

Your voice belongs at that table

There is someone waiting on the wisdom you carry

Our Call for Proposals is officially open for the 2nd Annual Couples, Co-Parents, & Caretakers Virtual Summit happening July 24–26, 2026

This year’s theme is Rooted in Us: Building Care, Connection, and Collective Strength, because Black autistic families deserve support that speaks to the fullness of our relationships, our caregiving, our culture, and our community

We’re looking for speakers, facilitators, advocates, parents, autistic individuals, professionals, and storytellers who can help couples, co-parents, grandparents, kinship caregivers, chosen family, and caretakers feel seen, supported, and equipped

Maybe your session is about co-parenting
Maybe it’s about burnout and repair
Maybe it’s about Black fatherhood, family advocacy, communication, sensory-aware homes, or building a village of care

Whatever your topic, we want sessions that are honest, practical, culturally grounded, and rooted in affirmation

🗓️ Proposal Deadline: June 6, 2026
💻 Summit Dates: July 24–26, 2026

This week on Mindful Mondays with Maria, we’re talking about what happens when rest doesn’t feel restful, it feels unsafe

When you’ve been conditioned to always produce, perform, prepare, and hold everything together, slowing down can feel uncomfortable

But exhaustion is not a badge of honor
And survival mode was never meant to be your permanent home

🎥 New episode out now on YouTube, www.autisminblack.org/youtube

What’s one form of rest you’re practicing this week?

Compliance is not the same as regulation

Sometimes what looks like “good behavior” is really a child masking, shutting down, or doing what they’ve learned keeps them out of trouble

Real regulation starts with safety
It starts with trust
It starts with support that honors the whole child, their needs, their communication, their culture, and their autonomy

Our children don’t need more pressure to perform “okay.”
They need environments where they can actually be okay

Support creates space for connection
Pressure creates survival mode

Join us TONIGHT for Autism in the Black Community, a free event from PDA North America benefiting the Autism in Black Foundation

This conversation will center the real stories, lived experiences, and systemic barriers Black autistic and PDA individuals navigate across schools, healthcare, diagnosis, advocacy, and community support

Dr. Destiny Huff and I will be talking about what often gets missed, including the over-identification of Oppositional Defiant Disorder in place of PDA, the hesitancy many families feel around labels and services, and what it truly means to move beyond awareness into meaningful support

📅 TONIGHT Thursday, May 14th
⏰ 8PM EST
🎟️ Free to attend

Show me the data, not the feelings

In IEP meetings, “they’re improving” isn’t enough. Our children deserve support backed by clear documentation, not vague updates

Ask for the receipts:

✔️ Work samples
✔️ Progress data
✔️ Service logs
✔️ The reasoning behind goals and accommodations

You’re not being difficult
You’re being informed

Your voice belongs at that table, and your questions deserve answers

Save this and share it with someone preparing for an IEP meeting

Did you know we released a new episode of Mindful Mondays with Maria?

This week we’re talking about end-of-year IEP meetings, and how schools can make delay sound like support

Because “we’ll revisit it next year” is not a plan
“Let’s monitor it” is not a service
And a pretty conversation does not mean your child’s needs are being met

In this episode, Maria breaks down how parents can recognize when the IEP team’s words are not matching the actions, what questions to ask, and why getting things in writing matters, especially before the school year wraps up

Our children are not loose ends. Their needs do not disappear because summer is coming

Mental health is not just about coping skills
It’s about safety, access, and environments that reduce harm
Without those, strategies can only go so far

Comment “safety” if that’s what mental health means to you

Happy Mother’s Day to the all the mothers, aunties, grandmothers, bonus moms, and caregivers holding so much with love, wisdom, and strength.

We see you.

We see the advocacy that happens in meetings, waiting rooms, classrooms, and kitchen tables.

We see the way you study your child, trust your instincts, ask the hard questions, and keep showing up even when systems do not make it easy.

Motherhood in our community has never been about perfection. It is about presence, protection, connection, and care.

Today, we honor the fullness of you, not just what you do for everyone else, but who you are.

You deserve rest.
You deserve support.
You deserve joy.
You deserve care that sees both your child and your culture.

Happy Mother’s Day from Autism in Black®. Your love matters. Your voice matters. And you are not alone.

Intersectionality is not a theory for our community. It is lived reality

Black autistic individuals and Black caregivers are not navigating autism alone. We are also navigating race, gender, culture, access, healthcare, education, and systems that often fail to see the full picture

Our experiences cannot be separated into neat categories

That is why support must be culturally grounded, affirming, and responsive to the whole person

When we honor intersectionality, we honor the truth of our lives

And our truth deserves to be centered
