Beyond the Bone: The Reality of Ballistic Trauma ποΈ
Ballistic injuries to the face are often catastrophic, presenting challenges that go far beyond skeletal repair. While we can stabilize and reconstruct the bone, the impact on soft tissue and sensory function is often permanent.
The Case: A devastating injury where a projectile entered the left temple and exited the right cheek.
The Intervention: Dr. Makepeace Charles successfully reconstructed the fractures of the midface and both cheeks to restore structural integrity.
The Outcome: While the physical framework of the face was repaired, the severity of the trauma resulted in the loss of the patientβs eyesight.
Surgery can mend the structure, but it cannot always restore what was lost. Our hearts go out to this patient as they navigate their recovery and adaptation.
