Is it possible that addiction is a disease intended to monitor the current atmosphere of human compassion? Is there any other disease that goes into remission through a self-directed process where you must examine your actions, right your wrongs, and make significant changes? The approved "medication" consists of a series of 12 simple statements backed by 12 clear principles. An elixir that, with rigorous honesty and a tincture of unyielding compassion, will save one from misery and death. Is it possible that God allowed addiction to develop into a disease in order to remind us that we may not always "see" illness, but we can always have compassion for those around us regardless of judgment? As some of the most brilliant, talented, and interesting people are brought to their knees, do we hold out our hand to pull them up? Or do we turn our heads away, as we quickly walk by?
