In 2022, a spinal infection changed everything for Richard, leaving him in a wheelchair with locked knees.

After being told he would never walk again, he met Dr. Claire Shannon, who saw a different path forward. One built on possibility, determination, and a goal that means everything to him.

He has already made incredible progress, and now he’s working toward something even bigger… walking to his grandchildren’s graduation this May.

Cheering Michael Kneeland on at the Paralympics. Go Michael! Go Team USA! 🇺🇸

“During my time as a Paley Institute patient, I learned to endure through the challenges of each day and to really appreciate the support I was given during my surgeries, healing, and physical therapy. At the time, it felt like it would never end, but as I learned patience, focused on the blessings of each day, and did what I needed to do, the results really made it worth it.

At Paley Institute, I was able to see that the doctors and therapists really cared about me, and I decided to listen to their instructions and follow them. I was able to carry that over to my Paralympic training and followed my coach’s training plans for me.

The workouts can get long and seem tedious, and trust me, they are harder than physical therapy! But just like the results of my four surgeries were so worth it since I can now walk around with my peers, the results of my workouts have been amply repaid with my opportunities to travel and compete with some of the best para athletes in the world. The Paley experience was the foundation of my discipline, and without it, I don’t know if I would be able to pursue this amazing opportunity.

And remember, you are not alone! I believe we are all fearfully and wonderfully made and that every one of us has a purpose in this life.

God has given me so many opportunities, and I’m so thankful for every one of them.”
