For the last week of Mental Health Awareness Month

All families and individuals go through numerous transitions over the course of their lifetime. Some changes are expected, others unexpected. Modern Family Law reported that approximately 40% of children in the U.S. experience parental divorce by the age of 18, and as of 2024, the U.S. divorce rate remains between 40% to 50% for first marriages. In 2024, studies indicate that adjustment disorder is a common mental health condition in children and adolescents, with prevalence rates ranging from 14% to 34.4% in pediatric behavioral health clinical samples, and up to 20% of outpatient mental health visits being for adjustment disorders.

Week 4 of Mental Health Awareness Month at WMPeds

The National Institute of Mental Health reports that: An estimated 31.9% of adolescents had any anxiety disorder (ages 13-18), and the prevalence of any anxiety disorder among adolescents was higher for females (38.0%) than for males (26.1%). Among US adolescents ages 12–17 in 2021-2022: 21% reported symptoms of anxiety in the past two weeks. The National Library of Medicine found in 2022 that: Remission of a primary anxiety disorder diagnosis at posttreatment found that youth in CBT had a remission rate of 49.4% compared to 17.8% for those in waitlist or no treatment.

Becoming a new parent, whether for the first time or not, can be a time with many changes, challenges, and unexpected experiences. Navigating supports and resources beyond friends and family can feel unfamiliar or difficult. The National Alliance on Mental Health reported that: Each year, 500,000 pregnant women in the U.S. will experience a mental health condition either before or during pregnancy.
As many as 75% of pregnant individuals with mental health symptoms do not receive treatment.
1 in 10 men experience postpartum depression.

Dr. Hyde and Stewie cheering on the Celtics! Amazing teamwork, joining together to overcome a big obstacle when they were a man down. Every problem is easier to overcome, no matter how big or small it may feel, when you have a group behind you pushing you along. When you fell down or need a push, reach out to family, counselors, or your pediatrician! 💚 🍀
