Pain is a LATE sign that something is wrong, not an early one. By the time you feel pain, your problem has likely been developing for some time. This means two things. First, don't wait until you're in pain to seek help. Second, don't confuse getting relief with actual healing. To feel better, you need only drop back below that critical tipping point. The kind of healing that means something won't just come back later can take longer. Give yourself the time you need to heal.

Does your back hurt or feel stiff when you go from sitting to standing? This is often caused by restriction at the psoas muscles, aka the hip flexors. Stretching often isn't helpful, however, because they are often weak and tight. Stretching them just makes them tighter. The weakness is often caused by fibrotic build-up of the tissue over time. Breaking up the fibrotic tissue via techniques such as ART (Active Release Techniques) is a highly-effective and lasting solution.

When a muscle is "locked long", ie. spasmed due to being stuck in a lengthened position posturally, it'll be very tight, often painful, and very resistant to stretch. When receiving typical massage work, therapists will often unwittingly devote a fair amount of time to these areas, wondering why they won't let go. From a client's perspective, you'll feel your body's resistance to that area being worked and may even feel the resulting destabilization/irritation. Trust what you feel and speak up. Don't just let the therapist keep hacking away at it. Odds are, you'd be better off if they focused on the opposite side.

When you lean your head back, that motion is actually supposed to begin at T4, well below your neck. Many have a rigid upper thoracic spine, leaving this motion to be done ONLY by the neck. This can result in instability and degeneration over time.
