A message from Dr. Xolani Bethwell Mbongozi: Obstetrician and Gynaecologist:
Antenatal Care plays a vital role in ensuring a healthy pregnancy and a safe delivery. Regular check-ups allow both mother and baby to be monitored closely, helping to identify and manage any concerns early.
Antenatal visits are also an important opportunity for education and support, including guidance on nutrition, supplements,
warning signs during pregnancy, and preparation for labour and childbirth.

Benefits for the mother:
• Early detection of complications such as high blood pressure or gestational diabetes
• Continuous monitoring of maternal health (weight, blood pressure, urine tests)
• Emotional support, reassurance, and the chance to ask questions

Benefits for the baby:
• Monitoring fetal growth and development through check-ups and ultrasounds
• Early detection of possible abnormalities
• Prevention of birth complications such as fetal distress
• Improved chances of a healthy birth weight and full-term delivery

Important reminders:
• Book your first antenatal visit as soon as the pregnancy is confirmed
• For a normal pregnancy, aim for at least 8 antenatal visits
• Monthly visits in early pregnancy
• Every 2 weeks from 28–36 weeks
• Weekly visits from 36 weeks until delivery
Even when feeling well, attending every appointment helps prevent complications and ensures the best possible outcome for
both mother and baby.
