Have you ever heard someone say 'there's no need to get angry', or 'cheer up, it's not that bad'.
Our emotions are hardwired in us, they are the product of evolution and like most things that we have evolved with, they are very important and useful.
There are 6 primary emotions, however there is an infinite number of behaviours that may occur as a result of these emotions. And these behaviours vary greatly regarding their importance and effectiveness, which largely depends on the context in which the behaviour occurs.

Anger is our personal bodyguard - it's there to protect us. When we feel angry, usually there's other painful emotions under the surface (sadness, fear, shame, jealousy, etc). Addressing problems with anger may involve managing other emotions more effectively.

Anxiety and stress have a bad reputation as 'negative' emotions that need to be reduced or eliminated.
I prefer to think of anxiety as our brains' way of looking our for us - it keeps us safe and helps us to live our lives well.
Anxiety is like a friend who is always trying to help: giving us advice, motivating us to get things done, and bringing things to our attention when required.
Sometimes it can be helpful to reduce anxiety, particularly if it's happening too often or it's too high for the situation. But anxiety is always on our side.

Believe it or not, parents are human too. It’s completely understandable to feel angry if our kids are demonstrating unreasonable or aggressive behaviour. Regardless of how we’re feeling, it’s important to maintain a calm, confident demeanour to prevent further escalations in behaviour.

Children learn by watching their parents, so when we’re feeling angry it’s the perfect time to role model strategies that we want our kids to do when they’re feeling angry e.g. have some space, do some tummy breathing, draw, or spend time doing an enjoyable physical activity. Kids are far more likely to use these kind of strategies if they've watched us doing the same thing.

SELF-CARE ISN'T SELFISH
It's important to take care of ourselves, not just for our physical and mental wellbeing; self-care also helps us take better care of others.
Here's some examples of things that we can do:
1) Make time every day for a relaxation activity: it could be meditation, a breathing exercise, yoga, a relaxation massage, a cup of tea, or anything else you can think of.
2) Exercise regularly: try to do something active every day, even if it's just a walk around the block.
3) Make sure you're getting enough sleep. Having a consistent sleep schedule (going to sleep and waking up at similar times) is also really important.
4) Recreation time: make 'appointments' in your calendar for fun/enjoyable activities. If something else comes up, be sure to reschedule your recreation time, just as you would for any other appointment.
5) Eat a balanced, healthy diet and drink lots of water.
6) Spend time with people who care about you.
7) Think of something every day that you're grateful for.
See if you can focus your awareness on the feeling of gratitude.
