Back in Chinese medicine school I had needled most of the Du or "Governing" channel on another student, and a bladder point called bao huang (bladder vitals).

I took this picture, and with a few lighting edits to it, you can see how active each point is.

Although we're only seeing surface activity in the photo, you can clearly see that each point has different amounts of activity going on.

This picture helps to visually demonstrate potential excess or deficiency, or essentially whether something is over active or under active.

One of the most common things seen in clinical practice is neck pain. There are many causes of neck pain. Most of them that I've seen are soft tissue related due to poor posture, or regular adjustments on their neck. Not shifted vertebrae.

Please seek a professional to receive any kind of adjustments. Even though serious injuries are uncommon, it is still a risk. Be sure your practitioner is also qualified, YouTube university does not count!

What we know, and what we think we know can sometimes be divided by a fine line.
It is an important and often over looked consideration, which is why the word 'idiopathic' used in medicine seems absurd.

This is a big part of what I love about the holistic approach. It isn't scientifically self limiting, and is commonly understood that there can be many causes to a single symptom or disease. If you don't have an answer, theres almost always someone that does.

The future we should look forward to is one of integrative medicine.. why?

The most common modern medical approaches to treatment of acute/chronic (internal) disease is to try and stabilize the (visceral) dysfunction via pharmaceutical or surgical intervention. This is life saving and absolutely makes sense short term!

However a few out of many blindspots are whether the body is healthy enough to accept or retain certain treatments, short or long term. Also the explorations at the cause of dysfunction can be quite superficial than required because of limited knowledge in other scopes of practice, limited use of resources, and if there is no identifiable life threatening causes the case is cast aside without any given direction on where else to go for help.

Chinese medicine and Osteopathy should be offered in emergency rooms/outpatients of the future to aid in treatments of non life threatening emergencies (which account for most hospital visits), because they excel in treating pain, and correcting musculoskeletal problems, without the use of costly and potentially harmful drugs.

Acupuncture and Chinese medicine are great for treatment of both acute and chronic dysfunction/pain. So good that McMaster University has a hand in Acupuncture training 👇🏻

Reduce the use of unnecessary medications covering up symptoms. Often pain can be caused by musculoskeletal issues such as soft tissues strains, or bone/joint 'misaligments' from direct traumas.

Certain kinds of aches and pains are often considered idiopathic, and the underlying cause will go undiagnosed by physicians, which will leave patients left with limited options.

Medications such as NSAIDS or in severe cases even opioids can be perscribed to cover up pain.

Acupuncture and Chinese medicine as well as many other manual therapies such as massage therapy or osteopathy can aid in your body recovering from chronic musculoskeletal dysfunction.

Scalp Acupuncture also called Neuro Acupuncture is used for neurophysiological disease such as paralysis, Parkinson’s etc.

Scalp acupuncture was originally developed by a neurologist in China back in the 60’s. Refined by long time practitioners Dr. Jason Hao and Dr. Zhu Ming Qing, it’s been used in hospitals in China frequently since its discovery.

This new discovery in modern medicine could be linked strongly to neuro acupuncture and how it works on the human brain. Very exciting!

Hidden tunnels which link the human skull to the brain have been discovered by scientists, leading to hopes the breakthrough may help in stroke and Alzheimer’s research.

Cupping is a therapy thousands of years old that we still use today. Traditional fire cupping uses a flame to burn oxygen out of the cup to make a vacuum. Cupping is used to decompress tissue and restore proper flow of fluid such as lymph, blood, interstitial fluid etc. Cupping also speeds up the recovery process in muscle tissue by not only helping new blood circulation, but also helping the old to be recycled by the body.

Spring time is here?! More people getting back outdoors and getting exercise by running, which is great.
However the running shoes we wear can do significant long term damage by weakening muscles, as well as causing higher unnatural impact on joints, causing lots of inflammation and long term degeneration of cartilage.
They can be the cause of running related injuries because they change the way we naturally land on our feet when we run.
Check out this short 10 minute video on the Tarahumara, the people capable of running 430 miles in just over 48 hours!

Run barefoot, and remember acupuncture can help with the aches and pains of getting back into your routine, whatever it may be.

"The emotions become causes of disease when we do not 'posses' them, but when they 'posses' us" -Giovanni Maciocia

Anger affects the liver
Joy affects the heart
Worry affects the stomach
Sadness (Grief) affects the lungs
Fear affects the Kidneys

Emotions generally will become a state of excess when suppressed. Acupuncture can treat emotional blockages, by unbinding the static energy in the acupuncture channels and organs.

This is a good analogical description of what an acupuncture point is. In addition, the acupuncture points are sorted mostly into 12 primary acupuncture channels (frequently referred to as meridians).

The acupuncture channels are the information highways in which we send signals throughout the body with. They are also the same pathways your body sends messages through.

Here is a brief example of your body communicating with referred pain through the acupuncture channels..

Out of the 5 elements (Fire, Earth, Metal, Water, Wood); the wood element is comprised of the paired organ system of liver/gallbladder. Coincidentally a clinical symptom used in western medicine diagnosis of problems in your liver and gallbladder is pain in your right shoulder/between your shoulder blades, or have localized pain in the upper right quadrant of your abdomen. If that isn't neat enough, the sense organ of the liver is the eyes; where we can see jaundice.

Great seeing TCM being integrated more and more into modern medicine.
Only a matter of time before we see this regularly in hospitals and clinics.
Acupuncture can be a much more effective and efficient alternative to other options; or a combination of multiple treatments might get the best result.

Awesome picture edit I made using Instagram.
I Needled the Du meridian in class one day and saw the skin colour change in a small area around the needle. Made a few changes to some light/colour settings etc. Finally got this picture that's showing how much stimulation a needle almost the size of a hair can get you.
