Nearly 4 in 10 U.S. Adults Now Obese

CDC stats show growing epidemic that means more illness and health care costs, health experts say

Almost forty percent adults in the United States are now obese, continuing an ever-expanding epidemic of obesity that's expected to lead to sicker Americans and higher health care costs.

Almost four out of 10 adults and 18.5 percent of kids aged 2 to 19 now meet the clinical definition of obesity, according to a new report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

When It Comes to Obesity, Genes Just Partly to Blame

If you have trouble keeping slim, don't put all the blame on your DNA.

People carrying so-called "obesity" genes tend to gain more weight if they don't work out or don't get enough sleep, said Timothy Frayling, a professor with the University of Exeter Medical School in England.

"You can't change your genes -- but they only explain part of your weight," Frayling said. This means that even people genetically inclined to pile on pounds can curb it by eating right and exercising.

Breast Milk May Arrive Late for Obese New Moms

Study finds delays beyond typical 3-day start to production in larger women

While obesity in pregnancy has long been linked to a higher risk for complications during childbirth, there's now another reason to avoid it: a late start to breast milk production.

That's the finding from a new study of more than 200 women with newborns who planned to breast-feed. The researchers found that delays in "lactogenesis" -- the production of breast milk within three days of delivery -- "occurred more frequently among women who were obese at the time of delivery."

What is obesity?

To measure obesity, researchers commonly use a scale known as the body mass index (BMI). 6 Self-Care Tips after Surgery

Your surgery is over, and now it’s time to heal. You may be anxious to get back to normal as soon as possible, and there are some steps you can take to help your recovery move along.

Recovery could take anywhere from a week to a few months, depending on your type of operation, and you may also experience some postoperative side effects.

There are also possible complications, such as infection, too much bleeding, reaction to anesthesia, or accidental injury; but these tips, along with your doctor’s orders, can help you have a safe and speedy recovery.

1. Take your medication to control pain. Your doctor will prescribe medication to help control pain at home. Keep in mind that it’s easier to prevent pain than it is to control it. If you have trouble controlling your pain, ask your doctor about additional measures. If your doctor has cleared you to exercise, plan to take your medication at least 30 minutes before you begin, and be sure to ease into exercising.

Your surgery is over, and now it’s time to heal. You may be anxious to get back to normal as soon as possible, and there are some steps you can take to help your recovery move along.

Recovery could take anywhere from a week to a few months, depending on your type of operation, and you may also experience some postoperative side effects.

Imagine giving birth to a beautiful baby girl and then, mere months later, you discover texts on your husband’s phone that not only revealed he was cheating on you but that he and his mistress were teasing you about your weight.

Some normal people would feel like taking their kids and burning the house down, but Betsy Ayala took a different route — and is actually thankful the whole thing happened.

Ayala, who lives in Houston, Texas, gave birth to her daughter Isabella in 2013 and at the time weighed 265 pounds.

She had been trying to get into shape when she discovered the cruel messages on her now ex-husband’s phone.

“I started in September and was doing okay until two days after Christmas when I found out my husband was cheating on me with a co-worker,” Ayala told Honey.

“I had been with him since I was 17 and pretty much devoted my life to our relationship and him.

“I was devastated. I found out through some messages I read on his Facebook where they were calling me a cow and fat and just trashing me and my whole world fell apart,” Betsy added.

The 34-year-old mom was heartbroken.

Obesity, inactivity could outpace smoking in cancer death risk

Obesity and inactivity could someday account for more cancer deaths than smoking if current trends continue, a leading cancer expert says.

As the rate of smoking decreases, other unhealthy habits threaten to offset the progress in reducing cancer deaths, says Richard Wender, a physician and chief cancer control officer at the American Cancer Society (ACS). A study in the New England Journal of Medicine last fall found 13 types of cancer were linked to excess body weight.

There's no guarantee that obesity and inactivity will surpass smoking as a cancer cause, Wender says, but the possibility is startling.

"Who would’ve thought we’d ever see the day where what you eat (and) exercise, could account for more cancer deaths than smoking?” he asks.

The connections between smoking and too much exposure to the sun and cancer are well known, but the connections between nutrition and exercise and cancer are less known and harder to determine.

More than 2 billion adults and children globally are overweight or obese and suffer health problems because of their weight, a new study reports.

This equates to one-third of the world's population carrying excess weight, fueled by urbanization, poor diets, and reduced physical activity.

The United States has the greatest percentage of obese children and young adults, at 13%, while Egypt led in terms of adult obesity, with almost 35%, among the 195 countries and territories included in the study.
